Retro Computer Museum in Leicester Sets January 25th Reopening After Major Flooding Damages Collection
The Retro Computer Museum in Leicester, renowned for its extensive collection of classic computers, consoles, and unique gaming hardware, is set to reopen its doors to the public on January 25th after suffering significant flood damage earlier this month.
The museum, a cornerstone of the UK’s retro gaming community, is currently undergoing extensive restoration efforts with the support of staff, volunteers, and donations from enthusiasts across the region.
On January 13th, museum founder and chairman Andy Spencer shared with the BBC his initial fears that the flood, which left around four inches of water in the main museum and close to ten inches in the arcade building, might result in the loss of "17 years of work in a single day." As restoration progressed, Spencer highlighted the dedication of the museum's volunteer team, who have been working tirelessly to clean and salvage as much of the collection as possible.
Donations to assist in the recovery have surpassed £2,500, demonstrating the community’s commitment to safeguarding the museum’s historical assets.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Spencer conveyed his gratitude to the team and supporters, noting, "It could have been much worse.
We experienced extensive water intrusion and damage, but with concerted efforts to dry out and restore the affected areas, we are optimistic about bringing the museum back to its former state.
We are truly appreciative of everyone lending their time and resources to help out."
While the museum’s carpets will require replacement and some of the collection’s irreplaceable equipment is beyond repair, key exhibits—including several operational Virtuality VR units and rare prototypes such as the locally donated "Playboy" handheld from Rare—are at the center of ongoing recovery efforts.
The Retro Computer Museum’s archives span decades of gaming evolution, from vintage Nintendo systems and eShop memories to iconic arcade cabinets and developmental milestones from across the industry.
The Retro Computer Museum has made public appeals for assistance not just through monetary donations but also for item replacements, with initial offers of support already coming in.
Interested supporters can contribute directly via the museum’s official channels, helping ensure that future generations can experience gaming’s rich history on site in Leicester.
The museum’s management and volunteers are resolute in restoring operations and look forward to welcoming visitors once again on January 25th.
As Leicestershire recovers from the recent floods, the Retro Computer Museum stands as a testament to the enduring passion and resiliency at the heart of the gaming community.
