Oasis Management Acquires Major Kadokawa Stake: Potential Impact on Nintendo Switch, Mario & Luigi, and FromSoftware Games

Oasis Management, a Hong Kong-based investment firm, has made significant waves in the Japanese gaming industry by acquiring an 8.86% stake in Kadokawa Corporation.

The acquisition, confirmed through Automaton and financial disclosures, comes with the purchase of over 13 million shares, positioning Oasis as a notable stakeholder in one of Japan’s most influential media conglomerates. Kadokawa is a powerhouse in entertainment, with its portfolio spanning anime, publishing, and, notably, video games.

The company owns prominent developers such as FromSoftware—creators of the acclaimed ELDEN RING and Dark Souls series—as well as Spike Chunsoft, known for the Danganronpa franchise, and Acquire, the studio behind the upcoming "Mario & Luigi: Brothership" for the Nintendo Switch.

Kadokawa’s reach extends across major titles that consistently perform well on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and regularly make headlines during Nintendo Direct presentations and the Nintendo eShop lineup. Oasis Management’s investment is aimed at pursuing what the firm refers to as "important proposal activities." This industry term often signals an intent to influence company strategy, operations, or management with the aim of increasing returns for shareholders.

Such moves commonly lead to calls for restructuring, strategic pivots, or increased emphasis on revenue-generating initiatives, including digital and mobile expansions. This strategy is not new territory for Oasis.

In 2014, the firm publicly encouraged Nintendo to embrace the free-to-play gaming and mobile market.

In a widely circulated letter sent to Nintendo’s board, Oasis argued for bolder monetization techniques such as paid gameplay upgrades, suggesting scenarios like users paying $0.99 to enable Mario to jump higher in a game—a notable example of microtransaction-driven design.

This approach marked a sharp contrast to Nintendo’s traditional, hardware-driven business model, which historically required owning dedicated devices like the Nintendo Switch to access its world-renowned intellectual properties. Kadokawa’s integration of FromSoftware, Spike Chunsoft, and Acquire places it at the heart of both traditional gaming and emerging digital strategies.

With key titles such as "Mario & Luigi: Brothership" scheduled for the Nintendo Switch and ongoing success with FromSoftware’s multi-platform releases, any shift in Kadokawa’s strategy could have a meaningful impact on major upcoming games and the broader industry landscape. As Oasis Management increases its influence within Kadokawa, industry observers and Nintendo Switch fans alike will be watching closely for any changes in direction—whether through expanded digital initiatives, altered monetization models, or shifts in development priorities.

For now, Kadokawa’s formidable portfolio and ongoing partnerships remain central to the evolving landscape of gaming on the Nintendo Switch and beyond.
