Shadow Puppeteer: Co-op Adventure Shines on Wii U eShop Shadow Puppeteer, the acclaimed co-op puzzle adventure from Norwegian developer Sarepta Studio, has captured the attention of Nintendo fans following its debut on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.

Known for its unique blend of atmospheric storytelling and innovative cooperative mechanics, the game has earned industry recognition, including the 2015 Indie Prize Director’s Choice Award.

Bringing this award-winning title to the Wii U marks a significant milestone for both Sarepta Studio and the ever-growing indie scene on Nintendo’s platforms. Originally founded in 2010 by a group of 15 students from Hamar, Norway, Sarepta Studio began as a passionate venture into independent game development.

CEO Catharina Bøhler explained that after completing their studies, the founders chose to combine forces rather than start multiple small studios: "As students, we realized our greatest strength was in working together, combining our diverse skillsets to create something meaningful." Shadow Puppeteer’s concept emerged in a competition at Abertay University, impressing industry veterans despite its ambitious scope.

Encouraged by positive feedback, Sarepta Studio successfully secured funding from the Nordic Game Program, a crucial resource for Norwegian developers.

Project manager Marianne Lerdahl highlighted the competitiveness of this process, stating, "Securing government grants was a challenge due to limited funds and high competition.

Persistence and belief in our project were key." The journey from classroom prototype to console release spanned several years.

After an initial PC release in September 2014, Sarepta Studio spent an additional year optimizing and enhancing Shadow Puppeteer for the Wii U.

The developers took player feedback seriously, implementing significant improvements in controls, graphics, and level design, ensuring the title was tailored for Nintendo’s dedicated co-op audience. The Wii U’s platform was chosen for its natural fit with the game’s cooperative spirit.

"Nintendo’s consoles, especially the Wii U, are synonymous with shared experiences," Bøhler noted.

Direct engagement with Nintendo opened doors for Sarepta Studio, with Lerdahl praising the company’s efforts to support and include indies: "Nintendo has been welcoming and supportive, breaking barriers for small developers and recognizing the value indie games bring to their ecosystem." Shadow Puppeteer revolves around two characters—a boy and his shadow—who must outwit a malevolent shadow puppeteer and rescue other captive shadows.

While playable solo, the experience thrives in local shared-screen co-op play, requiring close collaboration and creative puzzle-solving.

Sarepta Studio prioritized true cooperation: "Our goal was to make both roles equally significant, ensuring that neither player felt like an afterthought.

It took many iterations to achieve this balance," shared Bøhler. Emphasizing mood and minimalist storytelling, Sarepta Studio focused on atmosphere and music rather than dialogue, evoking the tone of a dark fairytale.

Lerdahl remarked, "We wanted players to feel isolated in the journey—as if it were just them and their partner exploring an immersive, shadowy world." Now available worldwide for Wii U on the Nintendo eShop, Shadow Puppeteer stands as a testament to the tenacity and creativity of indie developers.

Sarepta Studio’s journey, from university classrooms in Norway to Nintendo’s gaming platforms, not only demonstrates the power of perseverance in indie development but also underscores the importance of supportive ecosystems like Nindies and the Nordic Game Program.

As Nintendo continues to embrace indie innovators, titles like Shadow Puppeteer shine brightly for players seeking a cooperative adventure on their consoles.
