The revered RPG classic Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge is now fully accessible in English on the Sega Saturn, thanks to a successful fan translation led by Remisse.
Originally released exclusively in Japan by Data East in 1996, the Saturn port was bundled together with its sequel as Wizardry VI & VII Complete and boasted exclusive features not found in other versions.
Despite hopes for a Western release, the English-speaking world never received this console adaptation—until now.
Remisse, a fan translator, has released two versions of the English patch: a standard edition faithfully preserving the Saturn port and an enhanced edition featuring a larger mini-map, improved musical variety, and numerous bug fixes.
Both versions also restore a wealth of content previously missing from the official release.
This achievement not only brings the beloved dungeon crawler to new audiences but enriches its gameplay with subtle improvements tailored to modern expectations.
Discussing the process with Sega Saturn Shiro, Remisse highlighted why this particular port stands out: “This Sega Saturn adaptation is built on Wizardry VII’s ruleset, incorporating more spells, additional traps, and a wider range of skills—although some of these aren’t fully utilized in VI.
The visual style also closely mirrors VII, and newcomers benefit from a smoother introductory experience, which historically has been a sticking point for new Wizardry players.”
The journey from concept to completion was no easy feat.
"The early stages were certainly challenging," Remisse recounted.
"I had never tackled rom hacking before, didn’t know how best to develop my own tools, or how to insert new assembly code into the game.
Progress sped up about a month in, largely because others before me had deciphered crucial aspects like text compression, and robust editing tools were already available.
My success builds on the groundwork laid by dedicated fans in the community."
While some may expect Remisse to set sights immediately on Wizardry VII for Saturn, the translator has other ambitions.
"Even fans intimately familiar with Wizardry VI will find this Saturn port remarkably distinct, but the Saturn version of VII is unfortunately plagued by more bugs, inferior performance, missing content, and less compelling environments compared to its DOS counterpart.
The motivation for another intensive restoration just isn’t there at the moment.”
Looking forward, Remisse may turn attention to other prominent Saturn exclusives, such as Ronde or Langrisser V, contingent on the support and permissions from those involved with prior translation efforts.
The Wizardry franchise, which debuted on the Apple II in 1981, continues to have a profound impact, particularly in Japan, where it evolved into its own extensive sub-series.
With fresh accessibility through community-driven projects like Remisse’s, classic entries like Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge remain relevant on platforms such as the Sega Saturn, ensuring their legacy endures for new generations of players.
