Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Set for January 2026 Launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Director Naoki Hamaguchi Provides Insight Into the Adaptation Process
Square Enix has officially announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be arriving on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 platform on January 22, 2026.
As one of the most iconic role-playing games of all time, Final Fantasy VII’s original 1997 release left a monumental mark on the industry, and expectations are high as the Remake Trilogy heads to Nintendo's next-generation hardware.
Directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, the Remake Trilogy, including both confirmed subsequent entries, is making its way to the Switch 2, bringing the storied adventures of Cloud Strife and Sephiroth to a new audience.
In a recent internal interview at Square Enix, Hamaguchi shared his thoughts on the immense responsibility of adapting a franchise so beloved by fans.
He described the process as being a persistent struggle, noting that he feels conflicted about how to best translate the magic of the original game each day.
However, Hamaguchi emphasized that despite these daily challenges, the adaptation proves to be a rewarding endeavor.
Hamaguchi reflected on his personal connection to Final Fantasy VII, stating that when the original was released, he experienced it as an enthralled player, captivated by its groundbreaking storytelling.
Transitioning into the role of director allowed him to channel that passion into creating new experiences for longstanding and new fans alike.
As he works on bringing Remake Intergrade to multiple platforms and developing the third and final entry in the series, Hamaguchi highlighted the emotional weight and responsibility he feels to meet fans’ high expectations, while expressing confidence that it is precisely this challenge that fuels the team’s creativity.
Characterizing Final Fantasy VII’s essence as the freedom to seamlessly blend a spectrum of gameplay and narrative elements, Hamaguchi explained his drive to ensure that this spirit is faithfully realized on modern hardware.
"I'm constantly weighing how best to adapt the game, but the challenge only makes the project more meaningful," he summarized.
The upcoming Switch 2 release has already generated positive buzz within the industry.
Digital Foundry’s John Linneman recently praised the title, calling it "the best-looking thing I've seen on Switch 2." This bodes well for fans eager to experience the Remake Trilogy’s enhanced visuals and gameplay improvements on Nintendo's latest console.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be available on the Nintendo eShop upon launch, and anticipation continues to build as the Remake trilogy expands its reach.
While there is currently no confirmed release date for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or the trilogy's concluding chapter on Switch 2, Square Enix has assured fans that both titles are making their way to the system as well.
The Switch 2’s powerful hardware is expected to deliver an experience that does justice to this legendary RPG series.
As the release date approaches, fans can look forward to revisiting Midgar and beyond with enhanced visuals and performance, backed by the creative vision of Hamaguchi and the acclaimed development team at Square Enix.
