Neo Geo+ Launch: Preorders Surpass Annual Forecast, Production Raised Ahead of Nov. 12 Release
SNK and Plaion’s Neo Geo+—a modern recreation of the 1990s Neo Geo AES home system—has generated a stronger-than-expected commercial response, leading Embracer to increase production for the console ahead of its scheduled November release.
The Neo Geo+ is positioned as a premium retro hardware offering and will ship with an initial lineup of ten AES-era titles when it launches on November 12.
In a LinkedIn update, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors outlined the early performance of Neo Geo+ preorders.
He reported that paid preorders during the first 24 hours exceeded the company’s entire annual forecasted volume for the AES+ project, and that sales have continued robustly across the company’s own channels, online retailers, and specialist stores.
Wingefors also noted the console reached the number-one position in Amazon US’s Video Games category shortly after the announcement, a development that contributed to the decision to raise production forecasts ahead of the November 12 launch.
Wingefors emphasized the broader significance of the project within Embracer’s archival and publishing efforts, crediting the Embracer Games Archive as essential to making releases like Neo Geo+ possible.
He singled out Archive lead Martin Lindell as well as Plaion staffers Ben Jones and Craig McNicol for their contributions, and thanked SNK CEO Kenji Matsubara for entrusting the team with stewarding the Neo Geo AES brand.
Wingefors described the initiative as marking the start of a new chapter for the Neo Geo legacy.
The Neo Geo+ will launch with ten classic titles: Metal Slug; The King Of Fighters 2002; Garou: Mark of the Wolves; Big Tournament Golf / Neo Turf Masters; Shock Troopers; Samurai Shodown V Special; Pulstar; Twinkle Star Sprites; Magician Lord; and Over Top.
The hardware will be sold in three SKUs: Standard (£179.99 / €199.99 / $249.99 / ¥32,800), Anniversary Edition bundle (£269.99 / €299.99 / $349.99 / ¥49,800) and Ultimate (£799.99 / €899.99 / $999.99 / ¥150,000).
With production forecasts adjusted and preorder momentum established, Neo Geo+ is set to reintroduce the AES catalog to a contemporary market.
The November 12 launch will provide the first opportunity to evaluate consumer reception once units begin shipping to customers and retail partners.
