The Nintendo Switch eShop continues to attract retro gaming fans as D4 Enterprise expands its acclaimed EGGCONSOLE series with the release of two classic PC-88 titles: Crimson II and Dai Dassou.
These reissues further cement D4 Enterprise’s commitment to preserving and reintroducing Japanese computer game history for today’s audience, making rare titles accessible on the Nintendo Switch platform.
Crimson II, originally developed by Xtalsoft and launched in 1989 for the MSX and PC-88, is the direct sequel to the 1987 computer RPG Crimson—a game notable for drawing inspiration from the legendary Dragon Quest series.
Set approximately 50 years after the events of its predecessor, Crimson II transports players to a world once again threatened by dark forces following the defeat of the feared demon king, Crimson.
A new band of heroes emerges, facing the resurgence of evil and embarking on a journey rich in narrative and retro RPG mechanics.
Japanese gaming enthusiasts have long observed that Crimson II’s chapter-based storytelling, where each early segment highlights an individual hero’s story before uniting the group, is strikingly similar to the structure later made famous by Dragon Quest IV.
However, it is important to note that Crimson II predates the Japanese release of Dragon Quest IV by one year.
This timeline indicates that Xtalsoft was pursuing innovation rather than imitation, crafting a unique progression format that would later resonate in other RPG classics.
Crimson II is now available for purchase on the Nintendo Switch eShop at a price of $6.49.
As is typical for EGGCONSOLE releases, the game does not feature a fully localized English translation, which may influence accessibility for international players.
Still, its historical relevance and engaging RPG design offer significant appeal for retro enthusiasts with an interest in classic Japanese gaming.
Joining Crimson II is Carrysoft’s Dai Dassou, which will be released on September 18th.
Originally published in 1985 for several Japanese computer platforms, Dai Dassou challenges players to take on the role of a soldier navigating intricate mazes to rescue captured comrades while evading hostile forces.
Its straightforward, arcade-style gameplay means the language barrier will be minimal for many players, making it a strong option for those less familiar with Japanese.
Dai Dassou will also be available for $6.49 on the Nintendo Switch eShop, rounding out this latest EGGCONSOLE update.
By delivering these carefully curated classics, D4 Enterprise continues to grow its portfolio of important retro releases, reinforcing the Nintendo Switch as a go-to platform for preserving and enjoying Japanese video game heritage.
