The Disney Afternoon Collection Comes to Nintendo Switch with New SNES Additions and Features

The Disney Afternoon Collection has officially arrived on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, offering fans a revived compilation of classic Disney games, enhanced with modern features and new SNES additions.

Developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Atari, this definitive edition brings together a curated roster of titles based on the iconic Disney Afternoon animated series, marking the first time the beloved collection graces Nintendo’s popular hardware platforms. Originally released on other consoles in 2017, The Disney Afternoon Collection boasts six NES favorites, now joined by two SNES-era exclusives: Bonkers and Goof Troop.

The package is modernized with convenient updates such as rewind and time-attack modes, plus a robust in-game museum that delves into the cultural impact of these games throughout gaming history.

For both collectors and newcomers, the physical edition is set to debut at retailers on May 29, 2026, while digital versions are available now via the Nintendo eShop. Chris Kohler, editorial director at Digital Eclipse, emphasized the team’s commitment to honoring and expanding upon the original release.

Kohler noted that while he did not contribute to the first version, he was inspired by the previous editorial and research work done by Frank Cifaldi, now head of the Video Game History Foundation.

Kohler explained, "Cifaldi’s meticulous gathering and presentation of behind-the-scenes material in the Gallery mode created a virtual museum experience that was both entertaining and educational.

Our team wanted to build on that foundation, adding even more content while preserving the original spirit." Discussing the timing of the collection’s debut on Nintendo platforms, Kohler highlighted that during the initial development in 2017, the Nintendo Switch had not yet been launched and its potential was unproven.

"The Switch audience's love for timeless classics quickly became apparent and we’re thrilled to finally bring The Disney Afternoon Collection to Nintendo players," Kohler said. Among the included titles, Kohler recommends starting with the original DuckTales, praising its accessible gameplay—now further supported by save-anywhere and rewind functions—and a memorable, high-energy soundtrack.

These features, designed to soften the notorious difficulty of vintage 8-bit platformers, make the collection more approachable for modern audiences. A key point of fan excitement is the addition of SNES games Goof Troop and Bonkers.

According to Kohler, both titles were natural inclusions: "They’re inspired by The Disney Afternoon block, just like the rest of the collection.

Their presence helps shape the definitive assembly of Capcom’s Disney Afternoon-inspired console releases." When asked about potential downloadable content or further platform expansions, Kohler clarified that there are no plans for DLC or additional platforms at this time.

The development team prioritized the most highly requested additions and focused on meeting fans’ expectations for a comprehensive Disney Afternoon experience on Switch. Kohler also addressed technical aspects, noting the introduction of a physical release and support for online leaderboards in Boss Rush and Time Attack modes.

However, online co-op and GameShare are not supported.

Those buying one digital version will receive access to both Switch and Switch 2 editions, and feature parity is maintained across both platforms. Reflecting on the challenge of porting these classic games, Kohler said, "The most substantial efforts were around delivering a physical version for the first time and expanding the release to new territories like Japan." Any minor latency introduced by emulation has been minimized to preserve gameplay quality. The Disney Afternoon Collection is available now on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 globally.

The physical edition will be released at major retailers on May 29, 2026, offering both collectors and long-time fans a tangible piece of gaming nostalgia.
