Genki Unveils Magnetic Joy-Con Accessories for Nintendo Switch 2 at CES 2025
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, accessory specialist Genki drew significant attention by openly demonstrating its new range of accessories tailored for the yet-to-be-announced Nintendo Switch 2.
Despite Nintendo's official silence regarding its next-generation hardware, Genki seized the CES spotlight with prototype accessories, including a next-gen Joy-Con design, in what industry observers saw as a bold move to get ahead of the market.
During an exclusive interview with The Verge, Genki's co-founder and CEO, Eddie Tsai, shared previously undisclosed details about the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
Tsai described an innovative magnetic attachment system for the upcoming Joy-Con controllers.
According to Tsai, pressing the release buttons on the back of the new Joy-Con triggers a small pin to extend from the controller side, effectively breaking the magnetic bond between the Joy-Con and the console body.
This mechanism enables users to detach the controllers easily and securely during everyday gameplay.
However, Tsai cautioned that attempting to forcibly remove the Joy-Cons without using the designated release buttons is strongly discouraged.
With the integrated magnets in place, the controllers are designed to remain firmly attached under normal conditions, ensuring stability during both handheld and tabletop gaming modes.
Tsai emphasized that, while it is technically possible to separate the Joy-Cons through force, using the release mechanism is the recommended approach for users.
While Genki did not disclose the exact source of its hardware information, it is clear that these details were obtained independently and not through an official partnership with Nintendo.
Industry reports, including commentary by Laura Kate Dale, have suggested that Genki may have acquired hands-on experience with Switch 2 hardware through third-party channels.
Hands-on impressions from The Verge reveal that the Nintendo Switch 2's form factor is closer to Valve's Steam Deck than the original Nintendo Switch, though the updated Joy-Con controllers are less pronounced in their grip than those found on the Steam Deck, resulting in a device that is sizable but still maintains a compact feel compared to its competitor.
Nintendo has committed to an official announcement for its next-generation Switch hardware before the close of March 2025, keeping details about the device's final design and features tightly under wraps.
As anticipation builds across the gaming community, Genki's early accessory reveals underscore both consumer and third-party manufacturer enthusiasm for the new Nintendo hardware ecosystem.
Nintendo Switch 2 is set to become a major milestone for both Nintendo and its hardware partners, with expected continued support for eShop and expansions of the Nintendo Direct showcase events.
For now, fans and industry insiders alike await further confirmation and official details from Nintendo headquarters in Kyoto.
As excitement continues to mount, it is clear that the next era of Switch hardware, game development, and innovative accessories is just around the corner.
