Chiptune Musician Launches GoFundMe to Support Final Fight MD Developer MXRetroDev In the vibrant world of indie game development and homebrew communities, support and solidarity often emerge in remarkable ways.

This week, chiptune musician Laurent Crouzet has taken an active role to assist Mauro Xavier, also known as MXRetroDev—a well-regarded developer credited with beloved retro titles like Final Fight MD and Driftin' Rage, both of which have gained traction among classic gaming enthusiasts. Laurent Crouzet, known for his collaborations in the retro gaming music scene, initiated a GoFundMe campaign for Xavier after their time working together exposed the personal and financial struggles faced by the Brazilian developer.

In a statement, Crouzet explains that his decision came from a genuine desire to help: "After collaborating with Mauro on several projects, I truly came to appreciate his dedication not only to his craft, but to those around him.

In our professional exchanges, aspects of personal life inevitably entered the conversation.

It became clear to me that Mauro is not only passionate about his work, but also coping with difficult circumstances, from persistent health issues to providing for his family in the face of adversity.

When he shared the story about his recent car accident on top of everything else, I felt compelled to step in and offer tangible help." Mauro Xavier, aged 47, is a figure well-known in homebrew circles, particularly for his work bringing retro experiences like Final Fight MD to platforms such as the Sega Mega Drive and for his involvement in games with nostalgia-driven appeal.

According to Crouzet, Xavier has lived with bipolar disorder type 1 for over 15 years, managing his condition with ongoing medication.

Adding further complexity, Xavier had a pacemaker fitted in 2024 due to a rare heart condition that accelerates ageing of the heart.

Beyond his own challenges, Xavier’s family has its share of obstacles: he and his 16-year-old son are both diagnosed with mild autism, his eldest son has Asperger's syndrome, and his youngest has Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

All members of the household require continual psychiatric and psychological therapies, with medication costs forming a significant, recurring expenditure. While Xavier holds a full-time job and supplements his income via Patreon, the recent car accident strained his already limited resources.

Crouzet’s GoFundMe initiative is seeking 800 Euros, a modest goal of which over 500 Euros have already been pledged by supporters in the community. For those interested in supporting MXRetroDev, the GoFundMe remains active, and additional support can be extended by joining his Patreon.

The gaming community has historically banded together for creators who have enriched the landscape with enduring titles and homebrew innovation, and this is another opportunity to give back to a developer whose passion continues to inspire.
