In a recent episode of the Lex Fridman Podcast, Dan Houser, acclaimed former co-founder of Rockstar Games and one of the creative forces behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, shared illuminating insights into the craft of game development and Nintendo’s lasting impact on the industry.
As the conversation steered towards early 3D games, both Fridman and Houser highlighted Nintendo’s unwavering commitment to polish and design clarity—a signature, as Fridman described, where "every pixel has a purpose" and the company consistently delivers "a pure gaming experience."
Discussing the evolution of The Legend of Zelda series, Houser expressed deep admiration for Nintendo’s approach to open-world design, particularly in the critically acclaimed Nintendo Switch titles, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Shelving industry jargon for evocative analogy, Houser remarked that these games recall the craftsmanship of renowned filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock: “The newer Zelda titles feel as if they are speaking the language of video games itself.
Every mechanic and system interacts flawlessly, much like how Hitchcock films communicate in the language of cinema.
The experience is strongly stylized and purpose-built for the medium, making them uniquely and brilliantly interactive.”
Houser emphasized that while these Zelda entries are not striving for realism, their systemic depth and cohesion set them apart as singular expressions only possible in video game form.
"It’s as if you’re not just observing, but engaging with an experience that is complete and seamless in its design.
These games could exist only on their chosen platform and only through Nintendo’s vision," he elaborated.
Launched in March 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild became a defining entry for the Nintendo Switch, earning universal acclaim for its open-world innovation and selling more than 30 million copies worldwide.
Its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, released in May 2023, quickly became another best-seller, reinforcing Nintendo’s dominance in the action-adventure and open-world genres.
Dan Houser’s perspective carries weight, having led groundbreaking developments at Rockstar Games before departing the company in 2020.
Since then, he has founded Absurd Ventures, setting his sights on new intellectual properties across video games, literature, and other media.
Meanwhile, Rockstar Games is currently developing the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, targeting a release in 2026.
Houser’s remarks on the Lex Fridman Podcast spotlight the artistry behind Nintendo’s top-tier franchises—and affirm the Zelda series’ status not just as outstanding games, but as exemplary pieces of interactive entertainment on the Nintendo Switch.
Their systemic brilliance, as Houser notes, demonstrates how Nintendo continues to set industry benchmarks through ambitious, genre-defining design.
