Nintendo surprised fans worldwide with the recent announcement that Donkey Kong Bananza will revive the legendary "DK Rap" among its in-game tracks, making a significant nod to both nostalgia and the franchise’s colorful history.
Scheduled for release on July 17th, 2025, Donkey Kong Bananza is set to arrive exclusively on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, boasting features such as cooperative play and GameShare functionality with the original Switch console.
The "DK Rap" first debuted in Donkey Kong 64 (DK64) over 25 years ago and has remained a part of gaming culture ever since.
The song, composed by former Rare composer Grant Kirkhope, originally faced criticism from both reviewers and players, but its quirky charm has endured through the years.
In a recent statement to Eurogamer, Kirkhope humorously reflected on the renewed interest in his work, reportedly saying that he never expected the "worst rap track in the history of rap tracks" to make such a comeback.
Looking back, Kirkhope noted, "It’s strange to see the DK Rap embraced now, given how it was received when DK64 launched.
Back then, it seemed only younger children appreciated its humor, while the older crowd missed the joke.
I've had to wait 25 years for it to catch on!" He playfully added that his tombstone might read, "Here lies Grant Kirkhope, he wrote the DK Rap and the Goldeneye Pause Music," emphasizing the lasting impact of these iconic pieces.
Despite its controversial beginnings, the DK Rap has been steadily gaining recognition, even making an appearance during a key scene in The Super Mario Bros.
Movie.
Notably, Kirkhope was not credited for this usage, a fact that has drawn attention from fans and industry observers alike.
Donkey Kong Bananza itself sets out to celebrate the legacy of the Donkey Kong franchise.
The game features the return of beloved characters such as Diddy, Dixie, and Cranky Kong, alongside innovative co-op gameplay that allows friends to team up seamlessly on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
Additionally, Nintendo has confirmed an official Donkey Kong Bananza amiibo, further expanding the collectible lineup for series enthusiasts.
The integration of cross-generation GameShare ensures that existing Switch players won't be left behind, highlighting Nintendo's ongoing commitment to accessibility and innovation across its platforms.
With the inclusion of the DK Rap and a blend of modern features, Donkey Kong Bananza looks poised to attract old fans and new players alike when it launches next summer on Nintendo Switch 2 and via the eShop.
