Wii U Specifications: Full Hardware Breakdown from Wario World Leak

The Wii U, Nintendo’s eighth-generation home console released in late 2012, shipped with a distinct hardware profile that set it apart from contemporaries.

Launched in North America on November 18, 2012 (with subsequent launches in Europe and Japan in late November/December 2012), the system sat between the Wii and the Nintendo Switch in Nintendo’s hardware lineup.

Developer documentation hosted on Nintendo’s Wario World developer portal was later published by VGLeaks, showing the detailed hardware specifications that would define the console’s capabilities for developers and consumers.

The developer document lists the system processor under the codename “Espresso.” The Espresso CPU is described as using three enhanced Broadway cores — a continuation of Nintendo’s Power-based approach that emphasized console-specific performance and power efficiency.

For graphics, the document identifies an AMD Radeon™-based high-definition GPU labeled “GPU7.” Nintendo used a proprietary graphics API named GX2 for the Wii U, with functionality supporting Shader Model 4.0 and offering feature parity roughly equivalent to DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.3 for developers working on the platform.

Memory and storage details in the document are explicit: the console provides 1 GB of application-accessible system memory with an additional 32 MB of auxiliary memory.

Internal storage shipped at 8 GB on retail units, and the platform supports removable SD media (SD up to 2 GB and SDHC up to 32 GB) as well as external USB-connected hard drives for expanded storage.

I/O and connectivity specifications include four USB 2.0 ports and 802.11 b/g/n Wi‑Fi networking.

Video output supports multiple resolutions—1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i—and the system is compatible with a range of cable options including HDMI, D-Terminal, component, RGB, S-Video and standard stereo AV.

These specifications were central to how developers approached titles for the Wii U and influenced the console’s library and performance characteristics.

Nintendo’s choice of a custom AMD-based GPU and the GX2 API provided a development path distinct from PC and competing consoles, while the memory and storage profile framed the technical limits developers worked within.

The Wii U later sold approximately 13.56 million units worldwide over its lifetime and was succeeded by the Nintendo Switch, which launched on March 3, 2017.
