Square Enix has confirmed a Nintendo Switch 2 launch date for Final Fantasy XIV, the studio’s long-running, critically acclaimed MMORPG.

The publisher announced the Switch 2 edition will arrive on August 4, 2026, joining the game’s existing presence on PC and PlayStation platforms and expanding access to Nintendo’s next-generation handheld-home hybrid.

Release details and editions

Square Enix opened pre-orders for the Switch 2 edition immediately following the announcement.

The company stated that the Switch 2 version will require a platform-specific subscription to play, and that the title will be offered with a complimentary one-month subscription intended to test the game’s stability on the new hardware.

Players will be able to purchase a Starter Edition that includes early expansions, or a Complete Edition that bundles all content through the Dawntrail expansion.

Subscription and launch window

According to Square Enix, the Switch 2 edition’s subscription is distinct from existing PC and PlayStation subscriptions, meaning players who already subscribe on other platforms must purchase the Switch 2 subscription separately if they want to play on Nintendo’s hardware.

The publisher’s one-month free access for Switch 2 purchasers is positioned as a stability evaluation window rather than a permanent trial offer.

Evernold expansion and new content

In the same announcement, Square Enix provided additional details about the next expansion, Evercold.

The developer confirmed Evercold will introduce a new job, fresh explorable areas, and a new raid series.

Notably, the new raid series is a crossover collaboration with Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Square Enix published a full rundown of Evercold’s features alongside the Switch 2 release information.

What this means for players

The Switch 2 release expands Final Fantasy XIV’s platform reach and gives Nintendo players a dedicated version of the MMO with its own subscription model and introductory free month.

With pre-orders open and a definitive August 4, 2026 launch date, Square Enix has set a clear timeline for the Switch 2 rollout while simultaneously advancing FFXIV’s roadmap with the Evercold expansion.

Square Enix’s announcement includes the full technical and purchasing details in its official statement.
