Final Fantasy XIV Discussions Advance for Nintendo Switch 2: Square Enix and Naoki Yoshida Provide Updates
Final Fantasy XIV, the award-winning MMORPG developed by Square Enix, continues to set new standards in the world of online gaming.
Since its launch, FFXIV has amassed a broad player base across platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the recent addition of Xbox Series X|S.
Now, as anticipation builds for the Nintendo Switch 2, director Naoki Yoshida—a figure central to the game's resurgence—has shared encouraging updates about the possibility of bringing the MMORPG to Nintendo’s next-generation handheld console.
In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC) at Gamescom, Yoshida confirmed that discussions with Nintendo regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV have been “positive.” He stated, “My goal is to make Final Fantasy XIV and XVI accessible to as many players as possible.
I hope that as many people as possible are able to experience these games.” While he referenced both titles, the primary focus remains on expanding Final Fantasy XIV's reach to new audiences via Nintendo’s upcoming hardware.
Yoshida elaborated further, emphasizing the potential the platform holds for younger gamers: “If newcomers, especially from the younger generation, experience Final Fantasy XIV for the first time on Nintendo Switch 2, it could introduce them to the broader MMO genre.
The prospect of new players discovering MMOs on this console is very exciting.”
While Square Enix has not confirmed an official release or begun development of the port, Yoshida assured fans, explaining, “We are doing our utmost, so I hope players will look forward to what’s to come.
I kindly ask for a bit more patience.” His remarks speak to an ongoing commitment to broadening the reach of the Final Fantasy franchise, a key objective for Square Enix in recent years.
The partnership between Nintendo and Square Enix continues to strengthen, especially with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade slated for release on Switch 2 this winter.
This renewed collaboration signals a significant push to provide more flagship Square Enix titles on Nintendo hardware—bolstered by features such as native mouse support, which would suit an MMO like FFXIV perfectly.
Launched originally in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV has received consistent updates, expansions, and critical acclaim, cementing its place as one of the most successful and enduring MMORPGs globally.
Bringing FFXIV to the Nintendo Switch 2 would not only expand its audience but also introduce a new generation of players to its rich story, dynamic gameplay, and thriving online community.
For now, fans await further news regarding port development, but Yoshida’s statements indicate that the future is bright for Final Fantasy XIV’s potential arrival on Nintendo Switch 2.
Stay tuned for official announcements as Square Enix and Nintendo finalize their plans to deliver more legendary Final Fantasy experiences to Nintendo’s next console.
