Final Fantasy VII PC Release: Square Enix Launches Updated Version on Steam and GOG Amid Technical Issues

Final Fantasy VII, one of Square Enix’s most iconic role-playing games, has received a new and updated PC release.

Officially launched on February 24, 2026, for both Steam and GOG, this release follows Square Enix’s ongoing efforts to streamline and improve the player experience across all platforms.

Final Fantasy VII’s latest version now costs $11.99 and aims to bring the PC edition in line with its console counterparts, introducing enhancements and features widely requested by fans. The new release includes several quality-of-life improvements that echo options found in the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions, such as the ability to play at speeds up to three times faster, instantly maximize HP/MP and limit parameters during battles, and toggle random encounters on or off.

These updates are meant to create parity and deliver a consistent experience for players regardless of platform. However, the rollout did not go as smoothly as planned.

When Final Fantasy VII's updated PC version first launched, users reported that the download was effectively an empty folder with no executable file, rendering the game unplayable.

Square Enix quickly addressed the situation and released a working version following community feedback.

Still, the initial misstep exposed several lingering technical concerns. Prominent Final Fantasy VII speedrunner group 4-8 Productions highlighted additional issues, including blurry textures, inconsistent audio, and problematic battle speed settings on the Steam version.

These were quickly patched, but other problems—such as laggy cutscenes on the GOG version—remained.

As a result, the game currently holds a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam, based on user feedback. Another matter affecting the community is compatibility with 7th Heaven, a popular third-party mod manager for Final Fantasy VII PC.

The current status of mod support remains unclear.

Tsuna Mods, the developer behind 7th Heaven, is actively assessing compatibility and has publicly offered to assist Square Enix in resolving ongoing technical difficulties. Square Enix’s latest update also impacts the original 2013 PC version of Final Fantasy VII.

Going forward, the earlier edition will be labeled ‘FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition’ and can no longer be purchased by new customers.

However, those who already own it will retain access and receive the updated version for free.

Both versions will be listed separately in users’ Steam libraries, but save data will not transfer between them. Final Fantasy VII’s enduring popularity has been further buoyed by the recent trilogy of remasters for modern platforms—including PlayStation and Nintendo Switch—solidifying its status as a foundational JRPG.

Square Enix’s development history with the series and commitment to cross-platform updates continue to set benchmarks in the industry, even as the company works to address technical setbacks following this most recent PC launch.
