Final Fantasy IX Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana Departs Square Enix After 25 Years

Toshiyuki Itahana, the influential illustrator and character designer best known for his work on Final Fantasy IX, has officially left Square Enix after a distinguished 25-year career.

The announcement marks a significant moment for both the artist and the fans of the renowned RPG franchise, celebrated globally for its narrative depth and artistic vision.

Itahana's departure was confirmed online, where he detailed his decision to move on from Square Enix at the conclusion of 2025, after successfully fulfilling his commitments tied to the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX.

In his statement, Itahana expressed that completing his responsibilities for this milestone event felt like a natural conclusion to his tenure with the company.

"As I wrapped up work for the Final Fantasy IX 25th Anniversary, I recognized this was the right moment to close this chapter and embrace new creative challenges," he remarked.

Throughout his time at Square Enix, Itahana contributed to much more than Final Fantasy IX.

He played a defining role in the Chocobo spin-off games and notably directed two titles, including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, which debuted for Wii in 2009.

These contributions have left a lasting mark on both Square Enix's portfolio and Nintendo’s hardware, with Final Fantasy IX remaining available via the Nintendo Switch eShop. Reflecting on the transition, Itahana shared his aspiration to continue evolving artistically: "Going forward, I'll be working as a freelance illustrator and character designer.

I deeply appreciate the connections and experiences gained at Square Enix, and I plan to draw on them as I start this new phase." He further acknowledged the ongoing support from fans and industry colleagues, noting the positive impact their encouragement has had throughout his career. Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary was observed with a range of celebratory initiatives, underscoring the enduring popularity of the title on platforms such as the Nintendo Switch.

While some in the gaming community anticipated new announcements—such as a long-rumored remake—no such news has been officially confirmed as of this writing. Toshiyuki Itahana’s artistic legacy is woven into some of Square Enix’s most memorable works, and his move to freelance is sure to be watched closely by both fans and fellow developers alike.

Those wishing to support his future endeavors are encouraged to follow his updates, as he embarks on the next chapter of his career in game art and design.
