Description

Square Enix's relationship with the Nintendo Switch has yielded a robust selection of titles in recent years, with many classic and modern games making their way to Nintendo's hybrid platform.

However, the acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, have notably been absent from the Switch library.

These ambitious reimaginings of the iconic RPG have, until now, remained exclusive to more powerful hardware due to their technical demands and initial timed exclusivity agreements. Despite these constraints, new developments suggest that Square Enix is looking to broaden the availability of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

In a recent interview with the Japanese publication 4gamer, FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi stated the team’s interest in delivering the trilogy to a wider audience.

In his remarks, Hamaguchi expressed that Square Enix is aiming to make the full Remake series accessible to more players, with ongoing efforts from the entire development team as they work on the trilogy's concluding installment. With the final chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series currently under development, Hamaguchi clarified that expanding the trilogy’s reach is a strategic priority for Square Enix.

While specific details about platform targets were not disclosed, Hamaguchi’s comments have fueled optimism among fans eager to see the titles arrive on future Nintendo hardware.

The possibility has generated significant discussion within the gaming community, especially given the limitations that prevented the Remake and Rebirth titles from launching on the Nintendo Switch. Originally released for PlayStation platforms, Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched in April 2020 to critical acclaim, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth following in 2024.

Both games have been praised for their modern reinterpretation of the classic storyline and have achieved strong sales worldwide.

Square Enix’s continued success with the Remake project underscores the enduring appeal of the Final Fantasy franchise and their commitment to serving a global fan base. The Nintendo Switch eShop features a vast portfolio of Square Enix titles, but the absence of the Remake trilogy has been keenly felt among Nintendo fans.

Hamaguchi’s recent statements now indicate a shift in Square Enix’s approach, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility for future hardware generations.

While no official release date or platform lineup has been announced, the company’s intent to bring these celebrated games to more players is now clear. As Square Enix moves forward with the highly anticipated conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, the prospect of seeing these games on additional platforms—potentially including the next Nintendo console—marks a significant development for both the publisher and fans worldwide.

More updates are expected as the project nears completion in 2025.
