RCampeador, a homebrew developer known for retro conversions, is steadily advancing a fanmade Sega Mega Drive/Genesis port of the SNES puzzle-shooter Super Pang — rebranded in development as Mega Pang.

The project adapts the 1990 arcade sequel in Mitchell Corporation and Capcom’s Pang series (original Pang debuted in arcades in 1989 and later as Buster Bros. in North America) and follows the SNES/Super Famicom Super Pang release from 1992 (published as Super Buster Bros. in North America).

Development leverages Stephane Dallongeville’s SGDK and C programming for the Mega Drive target.

Project timeline and verified milestones

- Original announcement and early development (Feb 21, 2025): RCampeador posted initial footage and updates, confirming work with SGDK and C and noting the challenge of reproducing the SNES’ colourful pixel art on Mega Drive hardware.

The developer said significant effort remained to implement the game's visuals and systems.

- v0.1 alpha release (Aug 4, 2025): The first public alpha included local multiplayer, six World Tour levels, and optimisations for real hardware and emulators.

The release was explicitly described as missing several enemies, features and music.

RCampeador stated the project needed YM2612-style music and was actively seeking someone to produce Yamaha YM2612 sound chip arrangements for the soundtrack.

- v0.2 update (Feb 10, 2026): The developer published a new build (v0.2) on itch.io, increasing World Tour levels from six to ten, implementing the machine-gun power-up, and completing a major rework of the sprite and tile engine for bricks.

The update also confirmed that 60 frames-per-second performance was functioning as intended.

- Progress report (Sept 23, 2026): In a later update RCampeador reported World 2 of Mega Pang was nearly finished.

The developer publicly thanked pixel artist AngelSanchezTWI and composer Megadrive4ever8 for their contributions to the project.

A short comparison video accompanied the update, showing the current Mega Pang build running alongside the arcade and SNES versions.

Developer commentary (paraphrased)

RCampeador has said he’s enjoying the process of working in C with SGDK while acknowledging the considerable work required to reproduce the original’s visuals.

He has been candid about the audio’s incomplete state in early builds and confirmed active efforts to secure YM2612-style compositions.

The team has also indicated other game modes beyond Panic Mode may be feasible as development continues.

Where to try it

The v0.2 build of Mega Pang is available for free on itch.io.

All versions referenced above were released by RCampeador as public development builds for enthusiasts to test and follow.
