Independent developer Zvitor has once again captivated the fan gaming community with the release of his latest project: an unofficial remake of Konami's iconic X-Men arcade game from the early 1990s.
Known for his dedication to crafting high-quality, unofficial fighting and beat 'em up games, Zvitor has leveraged the Open Beats of Rage (OpenBOR) engine to pay tribute to the legendary coin-op title, while infusing it with fresh elements from various eras of X-Men video game history.
Maintaining the visual style and energy that originally made the Konami X-Men arcade game a classic, Zvitor's new version incorporates sprites and character designs inspired by multiple classic X-Men releases.
“In our remake, the core character bases are drawn from the SNES versions, but we adapted their appearances to closely match their costumes from the Konami arcade release,” Zvitor explained.
Specifically, Colossus and Dazzler remain true to their initial arcade designs, Wolverine and Cyclops draw inspiration from 'X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse' on the SNES, Nightcrawler’s look is adapted from the SEGA Genesis title 'X-Men 2: Clone Wars,' and Storm’s design references 'X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse' for the Game Boy Advance.
This approach enabled the developer to faithfully blend fan-favorite character iterations while maintaining a visually unified cast.
One of the major enhancements introduced in Zvitor’s remake is a robust four-player game mode, echoing the multiplayer action that cemented the legacy of the original arcade experience.
Recognizing that not all players can muster a full team, the game also provides AI-controlled partners, ensuring fans can enjoy cooperative gameplay at any time.
“This mode is still being refined and will continue to be improved moving forward,” Zvitor noted, pointing to his ongoing commitment to quality and community feedback.
The X-Men arcade remake is available for download on both Windows and Android platforms, making it accessible to a broad audience of retro gaming fans and newcomers alike.
Zvitor, already respected for previous OpenBOR-powered projects, continues to garner support and recognition within the indie and fan development scene for his attention to detail and passion for classic gaming franchises.
Players interested in experiencing the game or supporting Zvitor’s future work can find download links and donation options directly through his official project channels.
With this new release, Zvitor once again demonstrates the enduring appeal of the X-Men franchise and the boundless creativity within the independent game development community.
