The Japanese gaming market remains a critical barometer for global industry trends, and the latest data from renowned publication Famitsu underscores the continued strength of Nintendo’s platforms.
For the week ending most recently, the Nintendo Switch 2 leads hardware sales, reflecting robust consumer demand for Nintendo’s next-generation console.
According to figures published by Famitsu, the Nintendo Switch 2 moved 41,957 units, demonstrating a clear increase from the previous week’s tally of 35,359 units.
The Switch OLED model also showed strong performance with 10,817 units sold, compared to 9,922 the week prior.
The Switch Lite rounded out the family’s dominance, moving 6,680 consoles.
The original Nintendo Switch accounted for 3,092 units, showing that even as newer hardware arrives, legacy models maintain a dedicated user base.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 followed with 4,915 units, while the PlayStation 5 Pro and Digital Edition accounted for 2,437 and 952 units, respectively.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X managed 271 units, with the Digital Edition and Series S at 60 and 58 units, reinforcing the platform’s niche status in Japan.
The PlayStation 4, now a legacy console, managed 16 units during the same period.
These sales numbers represent a week-over-week uptick for nearly every major platform.
The Switch 2’s capacity to outpace its competitors suggests strong consumer interest, likely fueled by recent software releases and ongoing support through the Nintendo eShop and regular Nintendo Direct digital showcases.
On the software front, this week's charts highlight significant new releases.
'Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater' for PlayStation 5 debuted at number one with 63,585 copies sold.
Hot on its heels, 'Super Robot Wars Y' launched for the Nintendo Switch with 60,532 units, and 'Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar' for Switch moved 46,586 units during launch week.
The Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, 'Mario Kart World,' claimed the fourth spot, selling 35,185 copies in its debut.
Other notable entries include 'Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar Nintendo Switch 2 Edition' with 18,148 units, and fan favorite 'Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World,' garnering 12,174 sales.
Veteran title 'Donkey Kong Bananza' added 10,440 copies to its impressive cumulative sales of 286,119 units on Switch 2.
Expressing satisfaction with the launch momentum, a representative for Nintendo stated in a previous interview that the company remains committed to delivering innovative experiences for all Switch users, whether on legacy systems or the latest hardware.
As the Japanese market continues to set the pace for hardware and software adoption, these results signal a healthy competitive ecosystem, with Nintendo’s Switch 2 clearly establishing itself as the current market leader.
Stay tuned for further updates as new sales milestones and game launches continue to shape the industry's landscape.
