The most recent Japanese hardware and software sales figures from Famitsu offer fresh insights into the country’s video game landscape, highlighting Nintendo’s continued dominance with the Nintendo Switch 2 and the successful debut of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.
Famitsu, Japan’s most respected source for gaming sales data, reported that during the latest tracking week, the Nintendo Switch 2 topped the hardware charts with 83,825 units sold.
This marks a substantial increase from the previous week’s 65,434 units, signaling robust demand for Nintendo’s latest console iteration.
Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch OLED and Switch Lite continued to show resilience with 16,539 and 7,581 units sold, respectively.
The base model Nintendo Switch moved 2,588 units.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 also featured prominently, with the standard model selling 4,265 units, up slightly from 4,040 the week prior.
The PS5 Pro contributed 2,535 units this week, while the PS5 Digital Edition saw 737 units sold — a notable drop compared to the previous week’s 3,641.
Xbox Series hardware continued to lag behind, with the Xbox Series X Digital Edition moving 183 units and the Series S 54 units this week.
On the software front, Square Enix’s highly anticipated 'Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake' launched to impressive numbers.
The Nintendo Switch version of the game led the chart, debuting with 232,250 units sold.
The PlayStation 5 edition also made a strong debut, moving 96,812 copies.
Notably, the Nintendo Switch 2 iteration secured third place with 84,456 units sold in its first week.
Rounding out the top five were Nintendo hits.
'Pokemon Legends: Z-A' continued its strong performance across both the original Switch and the Switch 2, adding 82,812 units (totaling 1,150,583 lifetime sales) and 35,926 units (for a cumulative 720,822 on Switch 2), respectively.
'Mario Kart World' for Switch 2 also proved its staying power, selling 50,845 units this week and amassing 2,017,414 lifetime sales on the new hardware.
Other notable debuts include 'Tales of Xillia Remastered' on both Switch and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo’s 'Donkey Kong Bananza' on Switch 2, which accrued a total of 362,762 lifetime units after an additional 8,227 sold this week.
The new release 'Earthion' on Switch rounded out the top ten.
According to Famitsu’s latest report, these numbers underscore Nintendo’s commanding position in the Japanese market, both in console and software sales.
With blockbuster launches and evergreen titles continuing to drive momentum on the Nintendo Switch family, 2024 is shaping up to be another strong year for the Kyoto-based gaming giant.
