As Nintendo prepares for the next generation of its hybrid gaming hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2, attention is turning to one of its most successful franchises: Mario Kart.
With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe achieving record-breaking numbers and establishing itself as a sales powerhouse, expectations are high—and the bar is set even higher—for the rumored Mario Kart 9, widely speculated to be a premier launch title for the upcoming console.
Since its initial release, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has not only become the best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch, but it has also exceeded 67 million units sold according to official Nintendo data.
When factoring in the original Wii U version, this total approaches a staggering 75 million copies worldwide, cementing its place as a juggernaut in the racing genre and a staple of family-friendly gaming.
However, this unprecedented success has created a new challenge for Nintendo and the developers helming the future of Mario Kart.
In a recent video discussion, former Nintendo of America employees and hosts of the "Kit & Krysta" YouTube channel, Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, addressed the difficulties Nintendo faces in trying to replicate or surpass the achievements of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with the release of Mario Kart 9 on a new platform.
"Getting existing players to migrate isn't easy," Krysta noted during the conversation.
She explained that for many families, the prospect of buying an entirely new console just to play the next Mario Kart entry could be a tough sell, particularly when the current game continues to receive updates and holds considerable replay value on the Switch.
Kit agreed, emphasizing that while Mario Kart games traditionally perform well, the real challenge lies in surpassing the remarkable milestone set by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: "Nintendo's objective now is to do even better, but is it possible to improve on a figure as massive as 75 million sales?"
Interestingly, the duo also shed light on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's origins, asserting that its huge success took Nintendo by surprise.
According to them, the Switch version was initially considered an "afterthought" following its modest performance on the Wii U, yet its popularity on the Switch took on a life of its own.
This situation draws a compelling comparison to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was a highly anticipated and universally recommended launch title for the Nintendo Switch, especially after the mixed fortunes of the Wii U.
Now, as Nintendo gears up for a new chapter with the Switch 2, all eyes are on whether Mario Kart 9 can deliver the same kind of system-selling impact.
With the continued dominance of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the loyalty of its large player base, Mario Kart 9 will need more than just next-generation polish to motivate millions of current Switch owners to upgrade.
The launch of Mario Kart 9 on the Nintendo Switch 2 is poised to be one of the most critical moments for the franchise, challenging Nintendo to once again innovate and redefine what a flagship title can achieve.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is available now on the Nintendo Switch both physically and via the eShop.
As Nintendo prepares for the future, the gaming community eagerly awaits official details on Mario Kart 9 and its role in the upcoming era of Nintendo hardware.
