Embracer Group's Restructuring Leads to Layoffs at Crystal Dynamics, Beamdog, and More
In a significant development within the gaming industry, Embracer Group has announced further layoffs across several of its subsidiaries, most notably at renowned Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics.
The decision is part of an extensive restructuring initiative, as Embracer Group aims to streamline operations and increase cost-efficiency throughout its broad portfolio of studios and intellectual properties.
Crystal Dynamics disclosed on social media that ten team members were let go as a result of internal restructuring.
The announcement comes just over a year after Embracer Group acquired Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montréal, and Eidos-Montréal from Square Enix in May 2022, deepening its reach into well-known franchises and development talent.
At Embracer Group’s most recent annual general meeting, CEO Lars Wingefors addressed these changes directly, stating the company "will need to continue making tough decisions" to ensure it becomes "more cost-efficient." Wingefors underscored that these actions were forecast back in June and expressed confidence that the company will meet its stated financial targets by the end of the current fiscal year, which concludes in March 2024.
Crystal Dynamics is known for delivering high-quality experiences like the Tomb Raider series, which has enjoyed strong support on platforms such as the Nintendo Switch through the eShop.
Senior staff impacted by the layoffs include brand manager Nick Edwards, communications director Adam Kahn, and social media manager Neha Nair, according to multiple trusted sources, including Eurogamer.
Crystal Dynamics encouraged other studios seeking talent in brand direction, creative services, community, or IT to connect with their former employees.
Embracer’s period of high-spending acquisitions has lately given way to strict internal evaluations, often resulting in workforce reductions and even full studio closures.
This month, the gaming industry also saw job cuts hit Beamdog, the studio behind the roguelike adventure MythForce, and the closure of Volition, the Saints Row developer.
Such moves have sparked widespread discussion regarding the sustainability and strategic direction of broad mergers and acquisitions in the video game sector.
CEO Wingefors acknowledged in his AGM remarks that deciding to downsize or close teams is "challenging from many standpoints." He further noted that Embracer Group may consider divesting some of its larger, high-value assets in the near future as a potential path to financial stability.
These changes underscore a turbulent period for the company and raise questions within the industry about the long-term consequences of aggressive expansion followed by consolidation.
Embracer Group’s ongoing transformation reflects larger trends faced by game industry players, as companies evaluate how best to serve a shifting marketplace and rising development costs.
Gamers and developers alike will be keeping a close watch on how these changes impact upcoming titles and the future health of beloved studios like Crystal Dynamics.
