Yuzo Koshiro Showcases Earthion’s Soundtrack Across Audio Systems Ahead of Nintendo Switch Release Legendary video game composer Yuzo Koshiro is making waves once again as anticipation mounts for the launch of his latest project, Earthion.

Known for shaping some of the most iconic soundtracks in gaming history, Koshiro’s upcoming shooter is set to arrive on an impressive roster of platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, Mega Drive / Genesis, PlayStation 4 / 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

Physical distribution of Earthion will be managed by Limited Run Games, ensuring that collectors and longtime fans can secure a tangible edition of this noteworthy release. While eager gamers await a confirmed release date for Earthion, Koshiro has been stoking excitement with insights into the game’s auditory experience.

Recently, he shared a video demonstration, highlighting how Earthion’s dynamic soundtrack performs across a spectrum of audio equipment.

The goal was to explore how the game’s meticulously crafted audio translates from budget speakers to high-end retro hardware. At the entry level, Koshiro ran the game through affordable Daiso stereo speakers, retailing at just 300 Yen (approximately $2 USD).

Unsurprisingly, the sound quality was limited, offering a noticeably underwhelming listening experience.

The demonstration then moved on to the Sony Trinitron KV-14DA1’s built-in speakers—originally priced at 30,000 Yen ($200 USD at launch)—delivering audio quality that one would expect from a reputable television system. The standout of the comparison, however, was the $10 Funlogy stereo speakers.

Koshiro noted that Earthion’s soundtrack exceeded expectations on these budget units, praising their "vivid bass, crisp treble, and impressive stereo imaging, all delivered at an accessible price point." This suggests that high-quality audio enjoyment of Earthion does not have to be limited by cost, making it accessible to a wider audience. For enthusiasts of vintage hardware, Koshiro also showcased the soundtrack on the Victor RC-M70 boombox.

Originally released in 1980 at a retail price of 84,800 Yen ($587 USD at the time, or nearly $2,415 adjusted for inflation), this iconic boombox holds personal significance for Koshiro.

Reflecting on his history, he explained that the RC-M70 had been his tool of choice while composing music for classic Mega Drive titles like Ys, Sorcerian, and Bare Knuckle II.

The unit featured in the video was a recent auction acquisition, yet its pristine condition and performance transported Koshiro—and anyone listening—back to the creative heyday of his early career. As Earthion prepares for release across Nintendo Switch and other major platforms, Koshiro’s attention to musical presentation serves as a testament to both his legacy and his commitment to providing fans with a top-tier audiovisual experience.

Stay tuned for an official release date and further updates from Limited Run Games about physical editions.
