WatermelonDS — previously released as melonDualDS — and a new lightweight sibling called Seedless have advanced the Nintendo DS emulation scene for Android handhelds. melonDualDS first appeared with version 0.0.1 in June of last year as an Android port built on melonDS and the melonDS Android port by developer rafaelvcaetano.
The project, led by developer Sapphire Rhodonite, reached version 0.7.0 over the weekend, bringing several user-facing and backend improvements aimed at dual-screen emulation on modern handheld hardware.
What changed in v0.7.0
The 0.7.0 update formally rebrands melonDualDS to WatermelonDS and delivers a notable UI refresh designed to improve ROM list presentation and RetroAchievements support.
The release also integrates RetroArch shader presets across all renderers and introduces an experimental Vulkan FastPath renderer.
The developer has stated the long-term objective is to merge the standard renderer and the FastPath into a single stable and high-performance rendering pipeline.
Seedless: a lighter DraStic-based option
Seedless is presented as a lighter-weight alternative built around the DraStic r2.6.0.4a core and paired with a new Android frontend.
The frontend and UI have been rebuilt using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with UI and UX choices intentionally aligned to the WatermelonDS family.
Seedless targets Android handhelds with physical controls and is explicitly designed for dual-screen devices and lower-spec retro consoles.
Key features and verified highlights
- New Android frontend for a DraStic-based core (DraStic r2.6.0.4a)

Future platform plans
Sapphire Rhodonite has indicated a Linux version of Seedless is planned, targeting devices with specifications comparable to the Anbernic RG35XX SP.
The announcements focus on Android and forthcoming Linux targets; no other platform releases have been confirmed.
Takeaway
The WatermelonDS 0.7.0 update and the Seedless frontend mark a measurable step forward for DS emulation on Android handhelds.
With RetroAchievements integration, shader support, and an experimental Vulkan FastPath, developers and users focused on dual-screen emulation have new, verified options for both higher-end and constrained hardware.
