Description

Square Enix is building momentum in its celebrated Dragon Quest franchise with the upcoming release of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

Set to launch globally on February 5, 2026, this highly anticipated RPG remake follows hot on the heels of the recent Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, ensuring fans have no shortage of content to look forward to.

Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a bold reinvention of the iconic 2000 PlayStation title—a cornerstone of the series’ legacy.

Renowned for its sprawling narrative and beloved characters, the original game received a 3DS remake in 2013 (released in the West in 2016), introducing the classic journey to a new generation.

Now, Square Enix aims to breathe fresh life into this epic with updated visuals, streamlined gameplay, and, notably, a completely new conclusion. Game Informer recently visited Square Enix’s Shibuya offices in Tokyo for an exclusive first look at the remake and spoke at length with the game’s producer, Takeshi Ichikawa.

Ichikawa revealed a significant detail about the Nintendo Switch version: while the core story remains faithful to the original, "player choices now lead to a brand-new conclusion never before seen in any previous Dragon Quest VII release—including the acclaimed Nintendo 3DS version." He emphasized that even longtime fans will encounter a "fresh narrative experience" unique to Reimagined, signaling the presence of meaningful branching moments throughout the adventure.

Ichikawa explained that these innovations are designed to celebrate the series’ tradition while also inviting players old and new to discover something unexpected.

In addition to expanded narrative possibilities, Square Enix is introducing various quality-of-life enhancements and streamlining mechanics, paired with an evocative HD-2D visual overhaul that brings classic sprites and environments to life on modern hardware. In earlier promotional materials, Ichikawa alluded to the reimagined version exploring some of the original game's darker, more emotional storylines, and fans can expect improvements in navigation and user interface alongside the enhanced presentation.

This combination of familiarity and innovation is set to make Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined a standout release on the Nintendo Switch eShop and physical shelves alike. With its confirmed launch on both current and next-generation Switch platforms, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is poised to be a landmark re-release, celebrating over two decades of RPG heritage.
