Square Enix officially unveiled Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World during a Nintendo Direct, confirming a simultaneous global release for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 3, 2026.
The new entry in the Dragon Quest Monsters series returns to the franchise’s monster-befriending roots, starring familiar faces from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride and promising more than 500 recruitable creatures, new regions to explore, and four paid DLC packs available at launch.
Game overview and protagonists
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World centers on Bianca and Nera, two protagonists players can choose to control.
Both characters are driven by the same goal: to find the fabled Leaves of Life and cure their ailing fathers.
Square Enix positions the pair as monster wranglers tasked with restoring Witherwood, a kingdom ravaged by malevolent forces.
Square Enix described the premise in straightforward terms: Bianca and Nera are empowered to befriend monsters and command them in battle as they search for the Leaves of Life across a mysterious land.
The publisher also outlined the protagonists’ personalities and localization casting: Bianca is voiced by Eva Feiler (English) and Marina Inoue (Japanese); Nera is voiced by Kimberley Capero (English) and Kana Hanazawa (Japanese).
Supporting cast and world design
The game introduces supporting characters including Debora (Rebecca Hanssen in English, Romi Park in Japanese), Fluffy (Caius Nicholas in English, Yoshino Aoyama in Japanese), and Fizzy (Harriet Carmichael in English, Hina Suguta in Japanese).
Witherwood serves as a hub from which players explore diverse biomes — from sun-soaked beaches to overgrown plains and underwater locales — with a day/night cycle that affects monster behavior and spawns.
Monster systems and features
As with previous entries, recruiting and synthesizing monsters is central.
Square Enix confirms over 500 monsters, familiar series staples and new additions such as the Platypup.
Monsters gain experience, learn new abilities, and can be combined through synthesis to create unique team compositions.
The title supports scouting mechanics during battle and a Scout Run feature for additional recruitment.
DLC and launch extras
Four downloadable content packs will launch alongside the main game: Mega Mole Hole (custom dungeons limited to befriended monsters), Monster Marathons (a minigame awarding items and XP), the Metallic Ring (temporarily transforms foes into metal variants), and the Scout Run VIP Card (enhanced Scout Run perks).
These are also offered together as a 4-Item Set on the Nintendo eShop.
Availability and media
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World releases December 3, 2026 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Square Enix has posted a first gameplay trailer alongside the announcement and additional screenshots in the game’s official gallery.
