Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Launches Worldwide on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

Square Enix is bringing a new era of nostalgia to Nintendo fans with the upcoming release of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.

The highly anticipated title is set to launch globally for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 30, 2025, and will be available at retail and as a digital download via the Nintendo eShop. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake delivers updated versions of the original Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II, classic Japanese RPGs that laid the foundation for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.

Developed by Team Asano, a respected internal group within Square Enix known for their work on titles like Octopath Traveler and the acclaimed Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, this new project continues to refine the innovative HD-2D graphical style. The HD-2D technique blends traditional pixel art characters with lush, three-dimensional backgrounds, enhanced with high-definition visual effects.

This graphical approach, described by Square Enix as offering “a nostalgic yet fresh visual style,” has now graced six major releases, including the eagerly awaited Dragon Quest I & II collection.

By bringing together nostalgic elements and modern aesthetics, the series aims to captivate both returning fans and newcomers alike. Narratively, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake picks up where last year’s Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake left off.

Players are invited to guide the descendants of Erdrick, the legendary hero whose legacy endures throughout the early Dragon Quest games.

This direct lineage provides a meaningful connection for long-time players, while offering an engaging entry point for those new to the franchise. Square Enix has also released a new launch trailer, highlighting the meticulously updated visuals, orchestrated soundtrack, and engaging turn-based gameplay that defined the original titles.
