Lady Stalker 2D Brings Classic RPG Experience to Nintendo NES with Kan Naito at the Helm

In a significant move for fans of classic Japanese role-playing games, veteran developer Kan Naito has announced the upcoming release of Lady Stalker 2D for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), also known as the Famicom in Japan.

This new 8-bit RPG project revisits the beloved Lady Stalker universe and honors the legacy of acclaimed character designer Yoshitaka Tamaki, who contributed to the new game's visuals prior to his passing in 2023.

Both Kan Naito and Yoshitaka Tamaki are renowned within the industry for their collaboration at Climax Entertainment, where they played pivotal roles in genre-defining titles such as Shining in the Darkness (1991), Landstalker (1992), and the original Lady Stalker (1995).

The latter, initially a Super Famicom exclusive and a standout title for Climax—traditionally linked to Sega systems—inspired this new endeavor.

Lady Stalker holds a special place in the studio’s history due to its origins as a spiritual successor to Dragon Quest IV, originally envisioned as a spin-off starring Princess Alena.

After the pitch was declined, Naito, Tamaki, and fellow collaborator Hiroyuki Takahashi reimagined the concept as Lady Stalker, with Taito serving as publisher.

Lady Stalker 2D aims to capture the nostalgic charm of 1990s RPGs while introducing fresh technical innovations.

The upcoming game will be released as a physical NES/Famicom cartridge, boasting integrated LEDs that synchronize with on-screen action, elevating the player’s immersive experience.

This hardware-first approach is complemented by news of a dedicated Famicom-compatible console also in development, underlining the project’s commitment to authentic retro gaming appeal.

The development is spearheaded by Kan Naito, ensuring adherence to the series’ high-quality standards and heartfelt storytelling.

Tamaki’s posthumous involvement in Lady Stalker 2D’s character designs adds a meaningful tribute, celebrating his influential style recognizable from earlier Climax Entertainment classics.

Looking ahead, the Lady Stalker 2D team has confirmed plans for a crowdfunding campaign set to launch later this year.

This initiative will enable enthusiasts of the NES, Famicom, and retro gameplay to directly support the revival of a cherished RPG lineage, and potentially expand the reach of Lady Stalker 2D into new audiences.

Lady Stalker 2D is positioned as a unique addition to the NES library, marking a fusion of trusted industry talent, innovative cartridge technology, and reverence for classic RPG roots.

Fans can follow forthcoming updates through official channels and look forward to participating in the crowdfunding campaign as details become available.
