Square Enix is set to reignite nostalgia for classic RPGs with the upcoming launch of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, confirmed to arrive on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and other platforms on October 30, 2025.
This highly anticipated collection brings the first two titles of the Erdrick Trilogy into a single, remastered package, utilizing the stunning HD-2D visual style that fans have come to love from recent Square Enix releases.
The official trailer for Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, unveiled today, reveals several exciting new features and a rich reimagining of the beloved JRPG classics.
Notably, players are introduced to a brand-new explorable location, the Ocean Floor, which offers not only a fresh storyline but also additional monsters to challenge and conquer.
The trailer further highlights gameplay enhancements, such as improvements to the turn-based combat system and the inclusion of new items like scrolls and the series-favorite Mini Medals.
Players will be able to exchange Mini Medals for exclusive armor, weapons, and spells, enriching the RPG’s trademark progression system.
Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake lets fans play each game individually from the start screen, allowing for flexibility in experiencing both adventures.
Rooted in the legendary narrative crafted by Yuji Horii, the first chapter centers on the return of peace to Alefgard following Erdrick’s vanquishing of the Lord of the Underworld, only for the evil Dragonlord to emerge and threaten the lands anew.
Players assume the role of Erdrick’s descendant on a quest to save Alefgard, journeying across a kingdom shaped by the goddess Rubiss and battling an array of classic enemies.
The story continues in Dragon Quest II, set generations after the original events.
Here, the descendants of Erdrick have founded three prosperous kingdoms.
Darkness returns, however, with an invasion of monsters disrupting the peace.
The heirs of Erdrick—including the Prince of Midenhall, Prince of Cannock, Princess of Moonbrooke, and, for the first time in this version, the Princess of Cannock—embark on a cooperative quest to defeat the rising evil and protect the legacy of their legendary ancestor.
Enhanced exploration awaits, with new towns, castles, caves, and the ability to traverse seas and rivers by ship.
Square Enix is renowned for its meticulous approach to remastering classic titles, and Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake looks poised to continue that tradition.
Both games feature the series’ celebrated turn-based battles, now complemented by modern visual effects and richly orchestrated soundtracks.
In a recent statement, a Square Enix spokesperson emphasized the team's commitment to honoring the original games while introducing fresh content and gameplay depth for both newcomers and longtime fans.
Following the immense success of the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III, this new collection strengthens the franchise’s presence on Nintendo Switch and the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Players can look forward to an engaging retro RPG experience when the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake launches globally on October 30, 2025, via retail and the Nintendo eShop.
