Donkey Kong Expansion Opening Date and Attractions Announced for Super Nintendo World Japan

Nintendo and Universal Studios have officially revealed the opening date for the highly anticipated Donkey Kong Expansion at Super Nintendo World in Japan.

Marking a significant milestone for Nintendo theme park fans, this thrilling addition to Universal Studios Japan will welcome guests beginning December 11, 2024.

Designed as an immersive celebration of the iconic Donkey Kong series, this expansion offers fans a dynamic new way to engage with one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises. The announcement was made during a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation focused on Super Nintendo World.

Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary creator and Nintendo executive, led fans on an exclusive tour of the new Donkey Kong-themed area, providing a first look at signature attractions and interactive experiences that will define the latest expansion. Among the standout features is an interactive drumming minigame inspired by the rhythm and energy of the Donkey Kong universe.

Through this activity, guests can drum their way to unlocking a special encounter with Rambi the Rhino, a longtime fan-favorite character from the series.

Guests will also be able to use Power-Up Bands—wristbands that double as Nintendo amiibo—to tap select objects throughout the park and earn in-app points, enhancing their overall experience and merging the digital and physical worlds of Nintendo. Visitors to the Donkey Kong Expansion will also be greeted by a meticulously designed Donkey Kong mascot costume, joining the ranks of famed Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad.

The mascot, noted for its impressive detail, ensures photo opportunities and added immersion for every attendee. A major highlight revealed during the Nintendo Direct was the Donkey Kong Minecart Roller Coaster.

As guests queue for the ride, they are welcomed by an animatronic Cranky Kong, who regales them with tales of adventure and excitement.

The attraction itself features minecart-style seats and thematic roller coaster elements, promising a ride inspired by the classic minecart levels of the original Donkey Kong Country games.

While full ride details remain under wraps, Nintendo teased glimpses of the immersive track and ride technology that await future visitors. Culinary selections are also receiving a Donkey Kong-inspired twist.

The expansion will offer unique menu options, including an ice cream sundae served in a collectible Donkey Kong-themed glass and a "Special Hot Dog," ensuring that the immersive experience extends to themed dining as well. It’s important to note that the Donkey Kong Expansion at Super Nintendo World opens on December 11, 2024, exclusively at Universal Studios Japan for now.

Meanwhile, Super Nintendo World’s Epic Universe in Orlando, featuring its own Donkey Kong experiences, is currently scheduled to open on May 22, 2025. Stay tuned as Nintendo and Universal Studios continue to deliver innovative, interactive destinations for gamers and families alike.

For returning fans and newcomers, the Donkey Kong Expansion promises to be a cornerstone of theme park entertainment—blending iconic Nintendo nostalgia with state-of-the-art attractions.
