Donkey Kong Bananza Brings Back the DK Rap for Nintendo Switch 2 Fans The Donkey Kong franchise is set to make a spectacular return with Donkey Kong Bananza, an upcoming title for the Nintendo Switch 2.

This long-awaited installment celebrates both the legacy and the ongoing popularity of Nintendo’s iconic ape, and is bringing back one of the series’ most beloved musical moments: the DK Rap.

First introduced in Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, the DK Rap has earned its place in video game history as both a quirky and endearing anthem. Announced during a dedicated Nintendo Direct, Donkey Kong Bananza gave fans a sneak peek into its lush jungle environments, dynamic platforming action, and, most notably, its rich musical selection.

The promotional event featured a soundtrack filled with series classics, including the energetic “Jungle Hijinx” and memorable arcade tunes—now with a modern twist.

However, the highlight came when the DK Rap made its triumphant Switch 2 debut, featured during in-game rest stops called Getaways where Donkey Kong can take a break. The DK Rap, originally penned by composer Grant Kirkhope, holds a special place in gaming culture.

It introduced players to characters like Lanky, Chunky, and Tiny Kong, blending playful lyrics with catchy beats and a sense of humor.

Over the years, the song’s catchy refrain—“D-K… Donkey Kong!”—has reappeared in several Nintendo titles, including an updated arrangement in Super Smash Bros.

Despite its popularity, Kirkhope’s credit went unmentioned in the film due to Nintendo’s policy of listing the game of origin over individual composers for classic music. Donkey Kong Bananza promises to continue the series’ tradition of strong musical themes, showcasing tracks that resonate with long-time fans and new players alike.

With music playing a pivotal role in the adventure, the return of the DK Rap is particularly noteworthy, evoking the golden era of the early 2000s collectathon and uniting generations of gamers through its nostalgic sound. The game is scheduled for release on July 17, 2024, and will be available exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

Series favorites like Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong are all confirmed to return, along with the newcomer Pauline, further fueling fan excitement.

Additionally, Nintendo has officially announced a Donkey Kong Bananza amiibo, adding even more collectible appeal to the launch. As anticipation builds, Donkey Kong Bananza stands out as a love letter to the franchise’s musical roots.

The return of the DK Rap, in particular, ensures that this new adventure will have both heart and humor—delivering an encore that fans won't want to miss.
