Description

Toby Fox, the acclaimed independent game developer behind the cult-hit RPG Deltarune, has taken significant steps to ensure the continued progress of the game's development for Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2.

Originally known for single-handedly creating both Undertale and the early chapters of Deltarune, Fox has recognized the need for a larger team as the project expands in scope.

In a 2024 interview with Game Informer, Fox elaborated on his decision to bring more talent into the fold.

He openly acknowledged that producing and releasing Deltarune was no longer a solo endeavor for him, citing both the increasing demands of the project and his personal health concerns—the latter relating specifically to ongoing wrist issues.

Fox explained that while his wrist has improved over time, the limitations still prevent him from engaging in prolonged periods of typing.

To adapt, he employs voice-to-text tools for much of his work.

"Handling the entirety of development and release by myself just isn't feasible, both in terms of the hours required and because of my physical limitations," Fox told Game Informer.

"The improvement in my wrist has helped, but I still cannot spend extensive periods at the keyboard.

That's part of why it's essential to bring more people in—plus, collaborating on ideas can be genuinely enjoyable." Despite stepping back from some aspects of hands-on programming, Fox continues to serve as the creative director, reviewing the work produced by his expanded development team.

He likened his oversight to a chef managing a kitchen: "I'm in charge of the kitchen, but others are preparing the soup.

If the result doesn't align with my vision, we redo it.

Sometimes, it's simply a matter of flavor differences that are acceptable, as long as the end result matches the spirit and quality of Deltarune." Balancing the input of a larger group, Fox noted, brings its own set of challenges.

When he was the sole creator, differentiating between a flawed concept and poor execution was relatively straightforward.

Now, with a team, it requires more nuanced management and clearer communication to achieve the desired outcomes.

Nevertheless, Fox emphasized that writing and composing music for Deltarune will remain tightly controlled areas—he will be directly involved in both disciplines to preserve the distinct voice of the series. Deltarune is currently available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, offering fans chapters 1 through 4 via the Nintendo eShop.

The game's multi-chapter rollout and Fox's meticulous direction continue to earn praise from both players and industry peers.

Extended patch notes and ongoing updates demonstrate the ongoing commitment of Fox and his team to refine and expand the Deltarune experience for Nintendo gamers.
