Argonaut Games, a pioneering force in UK video game development, has made a celebrated return with the remaster of Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos, now available on Nintendo Switch.
Originally launched in the late 1990s for the PlayStation, Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos became an iconic 3D platformer, resonating with players for its charming protagonist, expansive levels, and family-friendly appeal.
The newly remastered version introduces updated visuals and enhanced controls, making the nostalgia-rich title accessible through modern platforms like the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo eShop.
In an interview with MCV Develop, Argonaut Games’ founder Jez San and co-CEO Mike Arkin reflected on why Croc was chosen as the debut remaster for the studio’s revitalization.
According to San, Croc stands out as Argonaut’s most popular and commercially successful title.
"While we have fond memories of games like Starglider and Buck Bumble, Croc sold well over three million copies in its original release—a remarkable achievement at the time.
Not only was it one of the first major platformers on PlayStation, but its broad appeal reached audiences across genders and age groups," San explained.
This widespread appeal, coupled with its robust sales record, made Croc the obvious candidate for Argonaut’s first major project after their comeback.
Though Croc is front and center, Argonaut Games has not ruled out revisiting other beloved classics from their catalog.
Co-CEO Mike Arkin shared that Buck Bumble, initially a Nintendo 64 exclusive, is among the titles the team hopes to eventually remaster.
"Titles like Starglider, which holds a special place as the game that put us on the map, and I-Ninja, a highly regarded but underappreciated entry, are constantly on our radar.
Buck Bumble, though less known due to its N64 exclusivity, deserves another chance in the spotlight," added Arkin.
Despite the enthusiasm, the studio emphasized their current commitment to Croc’s legacy.
Looking ahead, Jez San confirmed that the studio’s next major focus will be remastering Croc 2.
"We’ve openly shared that, should the Croc remaster perform well in the marketplace, the logical step is to tackle Croc 2 next.
It was built on a different engine, requiring a distinct approach, but our initial research and development suggest a promising upgrade path.
Pending commercial and financial approvals, we’re confident Croc 2 will build upon the foundation set by this successful remaster," San stated.
With the Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos remaster now available on the Nintendo Switch and momentum building behind future projects, Argonaut Games is poised to reintroduce classic adventures to a new generation.
Fans of retro platformers and storied game development alike can look forward to seeing Croc continue to leap forward, with hopes high for additional classic revivals in the near future.
