Constance, a 2D hand-drawn Metroidvania announced by ByteRockers Games, Parco Games and Blue Backpack, is coming to Nintendo Switch 2.
The title, which explores themes of mental health, creativity and work-life balance, will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide; no specific release date or window has been specified.
The announcement was accompanied by a trailer and technical details about the Switch 2 version.
Owners of the existing Nintendo Switch version will receive a free upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 build.
The upgraded version adds a performance mode that runs up to 120 frames per second and a quality mode that targets 1440p resolution.
The update also includes improved audio and integrated achievements.
Developers described Constance as a deeply personal, visual-driven experience.
They said the team aimed to create a "deep and lively atmosphere" through detailed hand-drawn environments and frame-by-frame character animation, using art and animation to reflect the protagonist’s inner world.
Gameplay and features
The publisher outlined core mechanics and systems in Constance, highlighting paint-based traversal and combat, progression via brush techniques, and a non-linear, interconnected world:
- Paint-based mechanics: Players can dive into environments and use paint to move through ground and walls, slice through air and enemies, and maintain a flow state during traversal and combat.
- Brush abilities: Unlockable brush techniques strengthen Constance, helping to defeat foes, tackle platforming challenges, solve puzzles and advance through the map.
- Non-linear exploration: The inner-world contains more than six distinct biomes, multiple paths, side quests, characters and collectibles, encouraging exploration and replayability.
- Corruption system: Using brush techniques corrupts Constance’s paint; reaching full corruption imposes negative effects, adding a risk-reward element to combat and ability use.
- Inspirations and upgrades: Players collect inspirations to sketch in a journal; sketches modify Constance’s capabilities and can be upgraded by gathering materials.
- Choice in death: Upon death, players can choose how to continue—either persevere through a cost or return to a safe point to explore other routes.
- Interactive backstory: Playable flashbacks reveal Constance’s past, touching on struggle, creativity and the balance between work and life.
Constance’s Switch 2 announcement confirms a focus on visual style, narrative themes tied to mental health, and platform-specific upgrades for performance and presentation.
Further details, including a release date and pricing, have not been announced; the Nintendo eShop listing will be the primary source for launch information when available.
