The release marks the first time a mainline Final Fantasy title adopts the retro-inspired HD-2D presentation, a visual style Square Enix says evokes classic and modern entries in the series.
Final Fantasy Resonance is built from the first story arc of the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and has been “refined and extensively rebuilt as a full‑fledged console‑quality RPG experience,” according to publisher materials.
Square Enix positions the project as a console reimagining rather than a direct port of the mobile original.
Producer Keisuke Nakashima has outlined the studio’s approach to translating the Brave Exvius arc for consoles.
Nakashima explained that Resonance was redesigned from the ground up for a console audience, with both story and gameplay updated to suit HD-2D presentation and traditional home-console expectations.
He described the narrative as centered on vengeance and unresolved guilt tied to the Crystals that maintain the world's balance, and highlighted the game's recruitment mechanic: players build their main party of heroes and can add characters known as Visions after completing quests or meeting compatibility checks.
Square Enix has highlighted a set of core features intended to define the Resonance experience.
Visually, the title emphasizes cinematic pixel art mixed with pixelized 3D models and dynamic camera angles.
The game returns to strategic, turn-based combat that emphasizes exploiting enemy weaknesses to stagger foes, break defenses, and cash in with powerful Resonance attacks.
The publisher also notes expansive side content, including encounters with the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum filled with deadly monsters, the Chamber of Arms featuring foes sealed in legendary weapons, and a confrontation with Ultima Weapon.
Final Fantasy Resonance will be available worldwide on 22 October 2026 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Square Enix has promised further gameplay reveals in the lead-up to launch, and the title will join the company's growing catalog of HD-2D projects as its first entry within the Final Fantasy franchise.
