On June 16, 2026, Mojang rolled out the Chaos Cubed update for Minecraft, introducing a new set of biomes, blocks and creatures that expand subterranean exploration.
The update ships to platforms including Nintendo Switch and is distributed as a free software update; players must download the update and, where applicable, comply with platform account requirements such as Nintendo Account linkage.
New mob: sulfur cubes
Mojang adds sulfur cubes as a passive mob native to the new sulfur caves.
Unlike standard hostile cave creatures, sulfur cubes wander their environment until fed a block.
When given a block—either directly by hand or by leaving one nearby—the sulfur cube absorbs that block and its physical behaviour changes.
Different absorbed blocks alter properties like bounce, buoyancy and sliding, and players are encouraged to experiment with a variety of blocks (including explosive or hot blocks such as TNT or magma) to see the effects.
Sulfur cubes can be leashed or collected in a bucket for relocation, and certain block combinations can be used to create playful movement or transport tricks.
New biome: sulfur caves
Sulfur caves are the natural habitat for sulfur cubes and include additional hazards and resources.
Players will encounter both hostile mobs and new decorative blocks such as colorful sulfur and cinnabar blocks.
Sulfur spikes—pointed formations that resemble dripstone—are decorative and do not inflict damage.
Surface indicators such as sulfur springs and geysers signal the presence of sulfur caves below; sulfur springs emit noxious gases that cause Nausea to players and mobs, while geysers propel water upward at high pressure.
Potent sulfur and geyser mechanics
Potent sulfur is the in-world component that creates the bubbling effect in sulfur springs and powers geysers.
When placed beneath water, potent sulfur produces bubbles and gas puffs.
A geyser forms when potent sulfur is placed on top of a magma block and both are submerged in water, provided water column constraints are met.
These mechanics introduce new environmental interactions for builders and explorers.
Loot and music
Chaos Cubed also adds the Bounce music disc, a new disc discoverable in chests located in mineshafts that intersect sulfur caves.
Platform and update notes
The update requires a free software download and, for consoles such as Nintendo Switch, may require a Nintendo Account and a broadband connection to download.
Mojang AB and Mojang Studios retain copyright; Minecraft trademarks remain with the Microsoft group of companies.
The Chaos Cubed content expands Minecraft’s underground variety with new building materials, environmental dynamics and a playful new mob that rewards experimentation and creative use of blocks.
