Description

With the highly anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, one of the most prominent announcements has been the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo’s next-generation console.

Developed by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 originally debuted in December 2020 for platforms including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, quickly becoming one of the most discussed titles of its generation.

Now, the acclaimed open-world RPG is making its way to Nintendo Switch 2, offering fans a chance to experience Night City on the go. In a recent interview with IGN, Charles Tremblay, Vice President of Technology at CD Projekt Red, provided deep insights into the process of adapting Cyberpunk 2077 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

He confirmed that initial development on the Switch 2 version began in the summer of 2023, even before an official Software Development Kit (SDK) was available.

Reflecting on the early stages, Tremblay recalled an internal evaluation where the team considered collaborating with Nintendo, expressing confidence and excitement about exploring the new hardware’s capabilities.

'As we looked at the opportunity, it was clear to everyone in the room that we wanted to pursue this,' Tremblay noted, emphasizing the mutual interest in bringing the title to a new platform. Collaboration played a significant role in the adaptation process.

Tremblay highlighted that maintaining a small, focused development team allowed for more direct and efficient cooperation with Nintendo.

According to Tremblay, handling the project internally rather than outsourcing key processes enabled CD Projekt Red to maintain high-quality standards and achieve a smoother transition for Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2.

This hands-on approach facilitated rapid problem-solving and innovation, ensuring that the game would not only run but excel on the new hardware. Cyberpunk 2077 for Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch alongside the console on Thursday, marking a major milestone for both CD Projekt Red and Nintendo.

The release leverages the advanced capabilities of the Switch 2 to deliver improved performance and visual fidelity, elevating the portable gaming experience for fans and newcomers alike. Since its release, Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved significant commercial success, surpassing 20 million units sold worldwide and receiving multiple post-launch updates that have enhanced its gameplay and stability.

The Switch 2 version is expected to build upon these improvements, making the open-world adventure accessible to a new audience. With this development, CD Projekt Red continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding the reach of its flagship titles through close partnerships and cutting-edge technology.

As the Nintendo Switch 2 enters the market, the arrival of Cyberpunk 2077 is a testament to the ongoing innovation within the gaming industry—and a clear indication that even the most ambitious titles can find a home on Nintendo’s versatile platforms.
