More than twenty years have passed since the debut of Capcom vs.
SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium, a landmark title within the fighting game genre.
The enduring popularity of this classic became evident once again with its arrival on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Capcom Fighting Collection 2.
Despite the opportunity for fans to revisit iconic matches on modern hardware, the community continues to call for a brand-new installment in the storied crossover series.
Hideaki Itsuno, the acclaimed director behind Capcom vs.
SNK 2, has openly voiced his enthusiasm for the possibility of returning to the franchise.
In a recent interview with VGC, Itsuno shared that, although he is no longer affiliated with Capcom or SNK, he harbors a strong desire to lead the development of Capcom vs.
SNK 3.
He stated that creating a new fighting game sits at the very top of his personal list of projects he hopes to pursue.
"I really want to make a fighting game in the vein of Capcom vs.
SNK," Itsuno explained.
"Currently, I’m not part of Capcom or SNK, but if the rights holders allowed me to, I would welcome the opportunity to develop Capcom vs.
SNK 3.
Bringing a new fighting game to life is my highest creative priority right now."
Following his influential tenure at Capcom, where he directed genre-defining projects such as Devil May Cry, Itsuno departed the company in 2024 to establish Lightspeed Japan Studio.
This new venture is housed under the Tencent Games-owned Lightspeed Studios, with Itsuno now focused on developing original IPs, especially within the action game space.
Both Capcom and SNK have maintained strong industry partnerships, often collaborating through celebrated crossovers.
Notably, Street Fighter 6—available on Nintendo Switch—welcomed SNK characters Terry and Mai as playable fighters.
SNK reciprocated the collaboration by featuring Capcom’s Ken in the recently released Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
These cross-industry efforts have fostered a devoted following, with fans continuously rallying for deeper crossovers and new entries.
Capcom vs.
SNK 2 remains an integral title for the fighting game community and enjoys a new lease on life via its Switch release in Capcom Fighting Collection 2.
While no official plans for Capcom vs.
SNK 3 have been announced by either Capcom or SNK, Hideaki Itsuno’s renewed call to action underscores both the lasting legacy and future potential of this beloved franchise.
For now, players can revisit these classics via the Nintendo eShop while eagerly watching for the next chapter in fighting game history.
