The action-adventure revival in the Onimusha series was first announced for Switch 2 in recent weeks, and the new date moves the release up from the originally planned September 25, 2026 window.
In a brief statement, Capcom said it was pleased to make the title available to players ahead of the initial schedule by setting the new release date to September 4, 2026.
The publisher’s update also noted a consequential change for digital pre-orders on Nintendo’s platform: Switch 2 eShop pre-orders were automatically cancelled, and customers who had purchased the game digitally will need to place a new pre-order if they still wish to secure a digital copy.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword continues Capcom’s reinvestment in its historical action series.
The game follows legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi after he is slain by otherworldly Genma and revived with supernatural Oni powers.
Burdened with the Oni Gauntlet, Musashi searches for his reason to fight while confronting a host of powerful Genma enemies.
The narrative also highlights Musashi’s intertwined fate with his rival Sasaki Ganryu, a roster of allies with distinct motivations, and a setting anchored in Kyoto — featuring landmarks such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasui Konpiragu Shrine.
Capcom’s scheduling adjustments are not unprecedented: earlier this year the company moved up the release of Pragmata, which launched on Switch 2 and other platforms in April.
The Onimusha announcement follows that pattern of date shifts intended to align launches across hardware.
Players who held digital pre-orders on the Switch 2 eShop should check their account and re-initiate purchases if they want the digital edition.
Capcom’s official channels will carry further details on editions, pricing, and platform availability as the September release approaches.
