Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has confirmed that a direct Nintendo Switch 2 port of Monster Hunter World would be extremely difficult, saying the studio would effectively need to rebuild the game from the ground up.

The statement clarifies why Monster Hunter World — originally released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 26, 2018, and later for Windows in August 2018 — has not been announced for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.

Tsujimoto told The Gamer that the core obstacle is the game engine.

He explained that Monster Hunter World was developed on a different engine than Capcom now uses for the series, and that starting with Monster Hunter Rise the team moved to Capcom’s RE Engine.

According to Tsujimoto, that engine transition changes the conversation entirely: porting World would not be a matter of optimization for the Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware, but would require rebuilding the title to run on the newer engine.

That technical reality helps explain Capcom’s current platform strategy.

The company has said its immediate focus is bringing Monster Hunter Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2, which is scheduled to launch on December 4.

Capcom has also published technical specifications for the Switch 2 version, underscoring the studio’s investment in releasing titles that are designed for the platform and its capabilities rather than retrofitting older builds.

Context for developers and fans

- Engine lineage: Monster Hunter World was developed on a different internal engine; from Monster Hunter Rise onward Capcom adopted the RE Engine for the franchise.

- Release history: Monster Hunter World debuted on consoles in January 2018 and on PC in August 2018; Monster Hunter Rise launched on Nintendo Switch in March 2021 and later on PC.

- Current focus: Capcom is prioritizing titles designed for Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, including the scheduled December 4 launch of Monster Hunter Wilds and related technical preparations.

Tsujimoto’s comments provide a clear, engineering-based explanation for why an official Monster Hunter World port to Nintendo Switch 2 is unlikely without a full remake.

For players tracking Monster Hunter on Nintendo platforms, Capcom’s shift to the RE Engine and its platform priorities will be the key factors shaping future releases and ports.
