Revolution Software has officially announced the arrival of Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror: Reforged, an enhanced edition of the second entry in the renowned Broken Sword adventure series, set to launch on Nintendo Switch and other platforms in early 2026.
The announcement builds upon the success of Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars: Reforged, which revitalized the original classic for modern systems with upgraded features and accessibility earlier in 2024.
Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror was first introduced in 1997 and quickly solidified its reputation as a beloved point-and-click adventure.
The new Reforged edition promises upgraded 4K visuals, with Revolution Software confirming support for modern hardware and, in turn, a premium experience for players on Nintendo Switch.
Fans of the series will also be able to enjoy an added layer of nostalgia; much like its predecessor's rerelease, The Smoking Mirror: Reforged allows users to seamlessly switch between the classic 1997 visuals and the newly enhanced graphics, giving longtime fans and newcomers a chance to experience the game in their preferred style.
The narrative picks up six months after the events of Shadow of the Templars.
Players reunite with protagonists George Stobbart and Nico Collard in Paris, where Nico's research into Mayan history and a mysterious Mayan stone tablet propels the duo into a gripping conspiracy spanning Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America.
Revolution Software has emphasized the importance of authenticity, ensuring that the Reforged release retains the compelling story and challenging puzzles that define the Broken Sword series.
Players will appreciate the choice between a 'traditional mode', which retains the original game's demanding puzzles, and a 'story mode' that adds helpful hints for those seeking a more guided experience.
This commitment to accessibility broadens the appeal for both series veterans and those new to the franchise.
Tony Warriner, co-founder of Revolution Software, highlighted the studio's goal to 'honor the legacy of the series while seamlessly adapting it for today's audiences.' He underscored that the remaster includes 'significant visual and gameplay enhancements' without sacrificing the 'charm and depth' that made the series a classic.
With the anticipated launch in early 2026, Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror: Reforged is poised to introduce a hallmark of 1990s adventure gaming to a new generation on the Nintendo Switch.
Meanwhile, those interested in delving into the origins of the series can experience Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars: Reforged, currently available on Switch.
