The announcement brings a major franchise from the point-and-click era into active film development under the stewardship of its original developer and an experienced production company.
Broken Sword debuted in 1996 with Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars on PC and Mac OS and established protagonists American George Stobbart and French photojournalist Nico Collard.
Over three decades the franchise has expanded through sequels, ports, and remakes, and Revolution Software has spent recent years “reforging” the first two titles and in 2023 teased a sixth entry, Parzival's Stone.
According to Variety, the screenplay will be written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, whose credits include Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the G.I. Joe film Snake Eyes.
Story Kitchen, known for producing the Sonic the Hedgehog films and working on the upcoming Life Is Strange series for Amazon, is set to produce the project alongside Revolution.
In a joint statement, Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M.
Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg said that very few franchises from the series' era have remained relevant and respectful of their audience, and that their objective is not simply to adapt a game but to translate a three-decade world to a new medium while collaborating closely with the franchise's creators.
Revolution’s lead has also commented on the collaboration, noting that Story Kitchen approached the IP with rare passion and that the creative discussions have focused on faithfully translating what Broken Sword is, rather than merely altering its surface presentation.
Revolution has described the team as excited to be working with Story Kitchen and Spiliotopoulos.
This is not the first time a Broken Sword film has been discussed publicly; a 2007 report indicated a separate development effort with CastleBright Studios’ producers Jay Douglas and Nav Gupta.
At the time, Charles Cecil expressed both excitement and caution, saying he was concerned that a poor adaptation could damage the franchise and that he wished to be involved creatively.
The current announcement indicates a renewed, collaborative approach.
Revolution Software has shared the Variety story on its social channels but told fans it cannot provide further details beyond the report for now.
As development proceeds, audiences and industry observers will watch how the team translates a landmark adventure series into film.
