Borderlands 4 Switch 2 Port Paused as Gearbox Refocuses on Post-Launch Content

After months of anticipation, the fate of Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 has been clarified following recent statements from 2K Games and Gearbox Software.

Initially announced for Switch 2 with a planned release in October 2025, the port’s progress was delayed in September 2023 with an aim to spend additional development time optimizing the gaming experience for Nintendo’s next-generation console. However, newly released earnings results from Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of 2K Games, reveal a significant change in plans.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 has been removed from the official release schedule.

Alan Lewis, spokesperson for Take-Two, confirmed to Variety that the team made the “difficult decision” to pause development on the Switch 2 port.

According to Lewis, Gearbox Software will now focus its resources on “delivering quality post-launch content and ongoing improvements” for Borderlands 4 on existing platforms. This development does not affect other Switch 2 projects from 2K Games.

The publisher reaffirmed its commitment to the platform, with notable releases like PGA TOUR 2K25 and WWE 2K26 still moving forward for Nintendo's anticipated hardware.

In its early roll-out on other platforms in September 2023, Borderlands 4 was both praised for embracing an expansive open-world direction and scrutinized for performance issues on consoles.

The now-paused Switch 2 version was expected to address these concerns, leveraging hardware advancements for a smoother gaming experience. Despite the halted development, 2K Games reiterated its ongoing collaboration with Nintendo and its plans to bring future titles to fans via the Nintendo eShop and other distribution channels.

Although pre-orders for the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 were recently canceled, the franchise remains a cornerstone in the publisher’s portfolio, and ongoing support is promised for players on currently available platforms. As the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch draws closer, fans can still expect major third-party support, even as Borderlands 4’s port is paused.

The ongoing partnership between 2K Games and Nintendo signals a commitment to delivering diverse experiences for the Switch ecosystem, while Gearbox Software continues to enhance Borderlands 4 through post-launch initiatives.
