Borderlands 4 Switch 2 Physical Box Surfaces Online Amid Indefinite Development Pause

In a surprising development for Borderlands and Nintendo fans, photos of a physical Nintendo Switch 2 retail box for Borderlands 4 have surfaced online, even as official news confirms that Gearbox Software has paused work on the highly anticipated action shooter.

The unexpected images, shared on the Borderlands 4 subreddit by user Veloxplayer098, depict a retail case, a Game-Key Card, and a DLC code, along with a screenshot of a Nintendo Switch 2 console identifying the cartridge. Gearbox Software, developers of the renowned Borderlands franchise, had originally announced Borderlands 4 for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 during the system's much anticipated April 2025 Nintendo Direct.

In a segment from Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice series, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford described Borderlands 4 as “the most ambitious Borderlands game we ever made,” raising expectations among fans for this next-generation loot shooter. However, excitement was tempered in February 2025 when Take-Two Interactive spokesperson Alan Lewis confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 was placed on indefinite hold.

Lewis called the decision a “difficult one,” and no new updates have been provided since, leaving the project’s future uncertain.

According to a trailer aired during the Nintendo Direct, the Switch 2 edition was initially planned for release on October 3rd, 2025. Following the recent leak, Reddit user Veloxplayer098 elaborated, stating, “The Key Card is recognized as legit, but it doesn't have any data to download.” The user also noted that the included DLC code had already been redeemed, preventing further tests to determine if the download functionality would change. The physical copy reportedly originated from a purchase on the online marketplace Vinted, a platform not officially authorized to distribute pre-release Nintendo hardware or software.

There is no indication that Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 has reached full production or is ready for public release, and Gearbox Software has not made any further announcements about the game's Nintendo Switch 2 development status since the February delay. Borderlands 4’s indefinite delay on Switch 2 follows a trend of major third-party titles reconsidering launches on new hardware pending further development resources and strategic alignment.

Nintendo has not commented on the appearance of Borderlands 4 retail materials, and the eShop listing, if once posted, remains absent. As of June 2025, Borderlands 4 is without a confirmed release date for Nintendo Switch 2.

Fans and industry watchers await updates from both Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive as the fate of this prominent looter shooter on Nintendo's next-generation platform remains uncertain.
