Bethesda Game Studios has publicly outlined its roadmap for the Fallout franchise, confirming that Fallout 5 is in preproduction and that multiple Fallout projects are active across the studio and its partners.

The developer’s announcement, posted on X, also named remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas as being in development and confirmed a renewed collaboration with New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment on a new Fallout title.

Background and context

Bethesda Game Studios is the long-running developer behind the mainline Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises.

Fallout originated in 1997, making 2027 the series’ 30th anniversary.

The studio most recently launched Starfield in 2023, and in its statement said it has been building a new shared technology platform — Creation Engine 3 — since Starfield shipped.

Both The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 are being developed on that engine, according to Bethesda.

Key takeaways from Bethesda’s statement

- Fallout 5: Bethesda described Fallout 5 as a “long-range destination” and confirmed it is currently in preproduction.

Rewording the studio’s statement in journalistic terms: Bethesda said Fallout remains a top priority and that Fallout 5 is being planned for a future release window while the company pursues multiple Fallout-related projects now.

- Remasters and Obsidian collaboration: The studio confirmed remasters of Fallout 3 (originally released in 2008) and Fallout: New Vegas (2010) are in development.

Bethesda also stated it is partnering again with Obsidian Entertainment, the original developer of New Vegas, on an additional new Fallout project.

- Fallout 76 expansion and franchise milestones: Bethesda announced a new Fallout 76 expansion that will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3.

The company also said there will be no Fallout Day broadcast this year but that it is planning a live celebration in Washington, D.C., for Fallout’s 30th birthday in 2027.

- The Elder Scrolls VI focus and Creation Engine 3: Bethesda reiterated that The Elder Scrolls VI is the studio’s primary development focus and that a majority of the team is working on it.

Both The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 are being built on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform the studio says it began developing after Starfield’s launch.

What Bethesda did not confirm

Bethesda has not provided release dates, screenshots, or gameplay footage for any of the announced projects.

The studio also did not confirm platform plans for these titles; it remains unconfirmed whether any of the projects will come to Nintendo hardware, including a potential Nintendo Switch 2.

Details such as release windows and platform availability will be necessary before retailers, eShop listings, or Nintendo Direct announcements can be expected.

Taken together, Bethesda’s update lays out a multi-year plan for Fallout and Elder Scrolls while making clear that public details and launch schedules are still to come.

Fans and industry observers will be watching for further announcements and the first footage or release windows for these headline projects.
