The Witcher 3, originally released in May 2015 and widely regarded as one of the decade’s most influential RPGs, has seen multiple platform versions, including a Nintendo Switch Complete Edition released in October 2019.
CD Projekt Red, the Polish developer founded in 1994, continues to expand accessibility options across its catalogue.
Bard’s Ballad bundles several individual accessibility toggles into a single preset that players can apply wholesale or customize to their needs.
The preset includes options such as disabling item weight and weapon durability and turning off herb icons on the mini-map, reducing micromanagement and interruption during short play sessions.
Karolina Niewęgłowska, CD Projekt Red’s director of player experience, explained on the company’s official forum that the preset is aimed at players who have difficulty concentrating or who face cognitive fatigue.
In journalistic terms, she said Bard’s Ballad was designed for people who may struggle with attention—such as those with ADHD—or who are experiencing cognitive exhaustion related to conditions like depression.
She added that the preset is also meant for players who are simply tired or overwhelmed, offering a practical example: a colleague described it as "a tired parent mode," which Niewęgłowska acknowledged as accurate and intentional.
The studio framed Bard’s Ballad as a quality-of-life option for players with limited time.
CD Projekt Red noted that inventory and equipment management—deciding what to drop, sell, or dismantle when a weapon breaks—can be immersive for some, but exhausting for others who only have an hour to play and want to focus on story and progression.
As with other accessibility additions, Bard’s Ballad is optional.
Players who prefer the original, unmodified experience can continue to play The Witcher 3 as intended.
The addition reflects a broader industry trend toward more inclusive settings that let players tailor difficulty and systems to their personal circumstances.
Reports on Bard’s Ballad were covered by outlets including Nintendo Life and Push Square following the developer’s forum post.
