GoldenEye 007 Plus Third-Person Mod Brings New Perspective to Rare's 1997 N64 Classic

Rare's GoldenEye 007, the influential first-person shooter released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, has been the subject of countless fan projects.

The latest notable effort is a third-person conversion called "GoldenEye 007 Plus," created by homebrewer Josh_7774 and demonstrated in a recent video uploaded by Graslu00.

The clip, running on Analogue 3D software, presents James Bond in an over-the-shoulder perspective across several recognizable levels from the original game.

The video showcases three stages from the 1997 N64 classic: the interior sections Silo and Bunker I, plus the exterior Surface I.

According to the uploader, the mod places Bond in a third-person camera that slides into GoldenEye 007's established level design with very little measurable impact on performance in the recorded footage.

Observers have compared the resulting look and pacing to late-1990s third-person espionage shooters such as Syphon Filter and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Graslu00, who posted the video, noted that character animations remain a work in progress.

In journalistic terms, they reported that some movement animations—specifically the crouch walk—currently produce visible sliding that does not yet match GoldenEye's original movement behavior.

Despite that, the uploader said the overall conversion presents a coherent third-person camera and level traversal.

Josh_7774 has published the mod under the "GoldenEye 007 Plus" name, and interested players can access the project files via the developer's GitHub page.

As a homebrew modification of a Nintendo 64 title, the project is an unofficial fan effort rather than an authorized re-release; GoldenEye 007's original release history remains tied to Rare and the Nintendo 64 platform.

GoldenEye 007 has a long community history of fan projects, speedruns, and competitive play, and this third-person mod is the latest example of that ongoing interest.

While fans continue to discuss potential official re-releases on modern platforms such as Nintendo Switch and the eShop, GoldenEye 007 Plus provides an alternative way to revisit Rare's 1997 engine with a fundamentally different camera perspective.
