Super Item Studios, the indie developer behind the charming dragon-themed 2D platformer Dono’s Tale, has unveiled a new stretch goal for its ongoing Kickstarter campaign.
Following the game’s warmly received announcement for PC, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, Dono’s Tale has captured the attention of retro platformer enthusiasts and the broader gaming community with its nostalgic yet innovative design. Announced via official social media channels, Super Item Studios revealed their next funding milestone: if backers raise a total of $30,000, the team will add a new Mode-7-inspired level to Dono’s Tale.
This stretch goal is especially notable thanks to the confirmed involvement of legendary composer Soyo Oka—best known for her iconic work on titles such as Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, and SimCity.
As of the latest update, the Kickstarter campaign has gathered $17,600 from supporters, with 11 days remaining to reach their extended goal. “We’re thrilled by the enthusiasm around Dono’s Tale so far,” commented Dagoberto "Dago" Duarte, lead developer at Super Item Studios, in a recent press release.
“Our aim is to create a heartfelt tribute to the 2D platformers that shaped our childhood, including classics like Yoshi's Island, Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country, and niche favorites such as Astal and Silhouette Mirage.
We draw on the fast-paced excitement of speedrunning and fighting games like Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario 64, Street Fighter Alpha 2, and even Devil May Cry to inspire Dono’s swift movement and dynamic combat.
Visually, the game borrows color palettes from beloved media like the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure series.
Our creative process involves reimagining elements from these favorites in fresh ways, making Dono’s Tale a blend of nostalgia and innovation.” Soyo Oka, whose contributions to Nintendo’s musical legacy are widely celebrated, also shared her excitement to join the project if the stretch goal is met.
She stated, “The world and hero of Dono’s Tale are absolutely delightful.
I’m genuinely inspired and eager to compose music that will make their adventure even more joyful.” Dono’s Tale is currently targeting releases on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, with additional versions planned for Xbox and PlayStation 5 at a later date, though these consoles are not currently included in the Kickstarter campaign.
The continued fundraising effort underscores the close relationship between indie studios and their communities, particularly as developers seek to enhance their games with beloved features and celebrated collaborators. With the Kickstarter campaign nearing its final stretch, Super Item Studios encourages both fans of classic platformers and newcomers to back the project, ensuring Dono’s Tale reaches its full potential with all planned enhancements and musical talent on board.
Interested supporters can participate via the official Kickstarter page before the campaign concludes.
